What Should I Expect?

Hey folks,

I am currently at 350+lbs at the moment and I have yet to receive my surgery date but I was wondering roughly how much weight will I be able to lose in, well, lets say a month after my (Roux-En-Y) gastric bypass surgery? Just a roundabout figure anyway.

Thanks!

If there ever was a time to take to heart the disclaimer "Individual results may vary" it is in relation to the WLS. My results were not typical.

I was told that I should loose about 1 pound a day for the first 30 to 60 days and then taper off to a steady loose of about 1/2 a pound.

I lost the pound a day only about for 2 weeks post-op and then about 1/2 a pound a day. But, on the plus side I maintained that 1/2 pound a day rate for about the next 10 months. In other words, I did not have the quick weight loss that most had, but a long steady loose. I did follow the program (more or less).

I am now down to about a 2 to 3 pound per week loss, but with a lot of ups and downs. I also have to work harder now to maintain a loss. As we loose weight, we burn less calories just living.

In the end, I am about where I feel I should be. My starting BMI was 63. About 1 year later, I have lost about 70% of my excess weight. The non-scale stuff if where I really notice a difference. I am much healthier, with more energy and zest for life than I have had in 30 years.

So to sum it up. It varies among people, and you will get lots of different answers.

Try not to think about a month after surgery, but a year, and a lifetime after surgery.

Why the focus on month post op? Did you know you can gain weight in the hospital? I gained, from Monday afternoon to Wednesday afternoon, half the weight I had lost on my preop diet. Eight pounds in 48 hours with nothing by mouth but ice chips and one ounce cups of Unjury.

Well it wasn't indended to be a focus, per-se. I was just trying to figure out what the average weight loss is.

That's awesome about the loss, Talula216! I'm hoping to start an exercise regimen that it suitable for my needs too. Good luck with the rest of your journey!

I didn't have the RNY but...here's my input.

It's hard to give you a number. There are so many factors. If you're on a pre op diet, you probably see a significant loss. Then after surgery----a gain due to fluids and recovery ----then you lose that and the process will start.

IMO and from observation, it seems like folks go really big or fairly small that 1st month. Takes a little time for the body to adjust.

Probably didn't give you a good # answer but just some observations.

PS----I think I saw your post on R&R---sorry you had those problems!

Thanks for the information, Elaine2. And yes, that was my post in the "Unmoderated: Rants & Raves" forum. People can be pretty mean sometimes.

If you check my profile, you'll see my monthly stats for WL. But it varies so much it's hard to say there's an avg.
