Hi! I just joined this site and am in the process of trying to find financing for BPD with DS. My insurance doesn't cover any weight loss surgery or programs, so I will have to self-pay.
There is a Bariatric Center of Excellence close to me, but they have a policy that you cannot self-pay for the surgery I want. If you don't have insurance to cover it, you can't have it. What?
I just don't get that. Anyway...
At that facility, they do the BPD with DS in 2 separate surgeries also.
I was wondering if anyone can tel me more aobut it and if that is the norm for everywhere?
Also, has anyone else had this surgery type as a self-pay? What did it cost?
I need to know for fundraising purposes.
Any and all information that you can share with me will be super appreciated.
Thanks & God Bless!

Biliopancreatic Diversion (BPD)

I want the BPD with DS, which is Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch.
There is a lot of information on ObesityHelp about this type of surgery.

It is recommended for those with BMI higher than 50.
My BMI is currently 68.5, I know, Yikes!

Welcome, Carla!  Glad to see you here.
Sorry to say, I have the same question as Dori....so I won't be much help!

You might want to cross post this on the DS board (if you haven't already). You'll probably get a bigger volume of answers.

Thanks for your suggestion though.

Actually Carla there is a BPD DS board as well as a straight up DS board.

Not all surgeons have the rule about self pay. I know finding a vetted DS surgeon is not always easy and I would imagine that a BPD DS may even be harder.

Good luck to you on your journey.

It sure is good to know that I will be able to find a surgeon even though it may take a little more doing.
Thanks for the info and encouragement.

Hello!
Sorry Im a litttle late to the party here.

Many vetran DSers are gone from the board so I hope you are getting what you need.

First of all you need to read every section on www.dsfacts.com that will help, make sure your surgeon is on the list of vetted surgeons.  If not -then find a new surgeon.

If you do not have to do 2 procedures why would you?  That is crazy to me, unless you needed to do that for health reasons.  I was the "victim" of a bait and switch type of surgeon at first and they told me they did the DS and it turned out they did not, of course after receiving money.

I will check in on your over on the DS board. The BPD board is for those people who have had that surgery- they do not typically perform just the BPD anymore.  But yes the BPD with the DS is more commonly known as the DS.

There are many self pay options including ones in Mexico, Spain and Brazil.  Please check into your options.  If you have any questions please ask, hope you found what you were looking for.

I don't have any information for you either, but I just wanted to give you some KUDOS for going after the surgery you think is best for you.

Lots of people who want a specific surgery don't fight for it, and end up regretting that decision. So good for you, for being an advocate for yourself!

Good Luck,
