hey y'all
well, today marks 50 lbs gone.

it's been about 3 months since my surgery (lost 10 of those pounds the week pre op) but i just feel like i'm not losing fast enough.  i worry my doc will lecture me (or make me feel like a loser, which isn't like him or anything.. irrational fears ya know?)

and i can't explain this to anyone without feeling CRAZY but .. well, i'm scared of exercising. i'm scared it's going to hurt, i'm scared i can't do it, i'm scared blah blah blah - I KNOW! IT'S CRAZY!

anyway... thanks for letting me blab some of my crazy and y'all have a great day!

I can't even lie... exercising sucks but you've already  lost a lot so I don't think it's going to hurt unless you have some physical ailments. I started excersing when I was well above 350. All I have done was walk and play the Wii but it really hasn't been that bad. I am going to buy those Richard Simmons dvds because I think it's going to be fun. If you exercise at home no one can see you so if you "can't do it" then only you know! When I first started walking I literally could only do 10 minutes and now I'm doing 30 minutes to an hour depending on where and who I'm with. I also have a ton of fun on certain wii games. It really makes a difference for me if I'm having fun or if my mind is occupied.

FInd something that works. Even small things will help. We have to get our bodies used to moving because in the long run it's really going to help with maintaining the loss... plus we are doing this to be healthy and you don't get much healthier than some good ol' exercise!!! :)

 Hi Annie

My surgery was 1 week before yours and I just started exercise 3wks ago because I just had no interst in doing it any sooner. I joined a local Zumba class and it was hard as hell but suprisingly fun at the same time. My muscles did not want to cooperate they seemed to rebel more with every step but I made it throught that first class and have gone 6 or 7 times since. I can't honestly say I like exercise but it feels good to get moving after sitting on my butt gaining weight for the past 3yrs. I know for me the the key to maintaining my weight loss down the line will lie more with exercise than with diet. So I'm determined to find things to keep it interesting.

If you have not excersized, truth be known you may be a little sore in the beginning. However start out slow. I started with small bits at a time like a snail. Any movement was great for me. I was 654 lbs when I started. I had to really think outside the box in ways for me to EXCERSIZE, but you are never to big to start. Even with ailments it is a choice of how and what to do.

Sounds like your scared of the aches and tiredness in body that may happen. But with EXCERSIZE their are days it just energizes me and motivates me even more.

Most things worth doing right are not easy. Physical workout are not glorious in ways, you should sweat and really know you have worked out...get the heart rate going.....

But you will feel and see your rewards!!

You can do it!! Just get up and dance or move about while watching tv, or music or whatever. Walk outside and back inside. Go to gym or ride a bike. Do some sit ups or leg lifts while you are in bed.

Find time or make time. If you want it you will find a way. Ask someone around you to be a buddy.... But remember that even if they wiener out.... It is for you and so you will want to follow through as a loaner...lol

Hugs,
Sherrie

I started working out when I was 420 lbs and I havent stopped since. Its been largely more of a mental battle than physical. I still have a lot of mental struggles - I feel like im too fat, too slow, never going to be able to do it.

But, Ive had to push myself, and yes, sometimes it hurts, sometimes I cant do what I set out to do, and I have to adjust my plans, BUT - more often than not (ie 90% of the time) I can do more, go further, and go faster than I ever imagined. It just takes a lot of mental strength to push your self through the uncomfortable part.

Honestly, I get a little nervous every time I do a group exercise class, and even spin class still after months because im afraid I wont make it though. Hasnt happened yet, but I totally understand the fear. You just have to decide whether you want to put yourself out there and try or never try, and never make progress.

The Leslie Sansone dvds are sooo cheap on amazon! I did one of mine today because I didn't want to do my treadmill. I did the 1 mile express brisk walk. It took 15 minutes and because of the kicking and leg lifts and stuff I felt like I was toning some muscles but I kid you not, when it was over I was like "what the heck, that was QUICK" and I almost played it over again. I didn't have access to the 2 mile walk on the dvd because it's scratched  otherwise I would have done that too :)

It was literally SO easy, took 15 minutes, I "walked" a mile and I worked out my legs, stomach and butt and a little arms. You can't beat that with a stick! Oh... and there was no one there to see me "fail". :)

Did you meet with your surgeon? I hope it went well.

You are doing great "losing weight" wise, and you are right to think that now it's time to include exercise. However, you don't have to think of it as this big huge thing that you have to do. That is scary!

Just break it into manageable chunks. For example, take a walk, see how far you can go- do it again the next day, then rest a day, then see if you can go a little farther the next day. It's the moving that matters, not what you do.

At 390lbs I started walking the block and swimming in a public pool. I couldn't do much, but it didn't matter- I was out there doing something. Then I upped it a little more, day by day. You can do this and soon you may find that you want to take a group class, or join a hiking club, or pick up a bike again.

The possibilities are endless!

When I started going to the gym at 359 pounds I could only walk four laps around their indoor track. 24 laps was a mile. For six months I worked on a machine I called a "stepper.". You sit in the seat, put your feet on pedals, grab handles, and push down with alternating feet while you push one arm away and pull the other one back towards you. It has a name, I just forget it.

After six months of that I started on the treadmill, had to work my way up on that too. You can find something that works for you!

You're normal; a lot of us feel we're not losing fast enough. You're doing great, however.

If you do want to lose faster, you definitely need to exercise. Think of it this way, you will start out w/50 lbs less than you had so it will be crazy easier! Start w/something you like and think you can keep up with. Just try it.

You can rent fitness DVD's from the library and try them at home if that would work better for you then going to a gym. Or you could dry some free visits at local Y's or gyms or get a one day pass. You can also try a local community fitness center that should be relatively inexpensive compared to a gym membership and normally only charges for the months you actually attend. Or you can always start w/walking around your neighborhood.

I started working out one month after surgery to make sure I had healed and wouldn't feel the pull of my excess weight on my surgical area. I didn't and now I am completely addicited and a gym rat, lol! Hitting the exercise as soon as possible will definitely make a difference in your body contouring and physique. Best of luck to you!

Like Nike says, "just do it"! :o)
