Hi Everyone,

Am I doing something wrong? Is it normal to experince NO weight lost for 3 days this early in the Vertical Sleeve post-op phase? I was loosing between one to two pounds a day there for about 7 days, but now as I approach 350 lbs my weight loss seems stalled at 353.

My doctor says I will lose 100 lbs the first 90 days, but at this rate I don't see it working out that way.

My diet is pretty simple
4 - 8 ozs of Nectar protein shake = 32 ozs liquid
2 - 8 ozs of Beef Broth = 16 ozs liquid
2 - 8 ozs of water = 16 ozs liquid

For a total of 64 ozs liquid
Total protein = 90
Total fat = 0
Total Carb = 2

Thank you, ~Nann

Your body is healing.  Give yourself a break, sometimes I lose a lot in one week and others I lose next to none.  Everyone's body is different, but you are so early out, get your fluids, and proteins in and do the best you can.    3 days is not a stall.  Usually something like 3 months is a stall.  I realize a stall is all relative to each person, but my advice is stay off the scale and let your tool work while you continue doing what you are supposed to be doing.  Don't stress, and watch the amount of salt in your broth.  I had some chicken broth that would swell me like crazy.

When do you move onto soft foods like cottage cheese, string cheese etc?

Also I wish for you to lose as much as you can but do not get into starvation mode to try and meet your surgeon's goals.  All you can do is your best!

Its gets easier and congrats on getting in fluids- that is great!

Hi JJ, thank you for your response.  Your advice makes a lot of sense to me.  I am grateful to you for your time to respond and share. I just moved to my soft foods today.  I had one jar of Gerber's Beef Baby food.  I will be moving on to non-fat cottage cheese, low-fat string cheese, etc a little bit each day.  I did not have any problems with the baby food today.  I took about 45 minutes to eat it slowly as I did not want to over fill my stomach and not notice it until too late.  Thank you again so very much for your reply.  I appreciate it. :)  ~Nann

I understand Nann where your coming from I just hit my 1 month and I go for a few days of loosing weight and then the next 2 I might gain a pound. My doctor said its normal since we have water weight gain and your boy is getting used to the small amounts of food. don't worry so much. Go a few days withnout weighing yourself and I'm sure with the less stress you will go back to loosing.

Hi Mommy2Aaron and thanks for your response. I've decided to pretty much just weigh myself on Monday mornings only.  I report into my Dr's office via email on my weight loss and anything else I want to share or have questions about.  Thanks again for the sound advice. ~Nann

Why are you weighing every day? Our bodies fluctuate DAILY.
I onle weigh once a week and at the end of the month if it does not fall on my weigh in day.
Start weighing in less often and see if that helps.

Hi LaToya, thanks for responding.  I have been weighing myself on a daily basis because I'm looking for progress and of course it's so much fun to see that the weight it coming off.  However it wasn't any fun when I stalled.

I have decided to weigh myself only once a week and stop fretting about it.  The main thing is that I do what I'm supposed to be doing and I'm adopting the approach that the weight loss occurs as it occurs.  Thanks again for posting.

Hey Nann,

First thing, if you surgeon can GUARANTY 100 pounds in 90 days, he/she must have a crystal ball... I am calling him/her OUT!  I started at 474, and I only lost 80 pounds my first 90 days, but I also had a complication that kept me from exercising for two months... But I also came back with consistent loses the next two visits, which surprised them!  You will hit plateaus, you will gain, you will lose, it is all individual -- so I say this:  Your results may vary!

Believe it or not, I weighed at the plastic surgeons, I knew I was up 5 pounds, told the nurse (on my period) that next week it would be down at least 5 pounds... The next day, I was already 3 pounds lighter.  Fluctuations happen.  Do NOT weigh daily, it will drive you insane.  Did you gain 100 pounds in 90 days?  No?  Well, guess what, you may or may not LOSE 100 pounds in 90 days.  It took time to get to your high weight, it will take time to lose it.  Be patient & diligent.

When you progress to "real food," you will have to deal with momentary weight gain, which is natural.  Have you spoken with a licensed nutritionist?  Are you ready for the next eating phase?

Lots to learn, but you are doing the right thing by asking.  Try not to focus so much on the scale numbers, food journal & journal activity -- are you exercising enough?

Study as much as you can, ask as many questions as you have them, and know you are going to get as many different responses as there are people willing to answer -- see, your results may vary!!!

Stay positive!

Hi Brenda!

Thanks so much for your post response.  I've given up on my obsession with the scale, it just wasn't helping.  I do weigh in for my report to my Dr on Monday mornings, so once a week is fine.

I am in regular touch with my RD in fact we have a phone appointment on Friday.  I see my surgeon later this month too.  I'm a type A personality and just need to dial it all back a bit and recognize what I have control of e.g. what I eat and how much exercises I do vs. what I don't have control of such as when and how much weight (fat) leaves my body.

I have just started this last week to eat pureed foods.  I pureed some roasted chicken yesterday and Mmmm...good.  Could only eat about a shot-glass worth of food, it still amazes me how little I am eating.  I still supplement with protein shakes. To ensure I get my 70 grams of protein in. I'm looking forward to starting a walking program next week, but with that said I am already more active in general.  I go out to run errands, grocery shopping, so I am pleased with myself overall.

Again, thank you so much for your reply to my call for help.  I am so impresses with the quality of individuals on OH.  Words alone just don't seem to be enough to convey how helpful each of you have been to my piece of mind.

~Nann
