Hi everyone! My name is LaToya.
I am in the process of getting the RNY and was in tears when I found out that my BMI was 65....
I originally wanted the LapBand but the surgeon stated that it would not be as suceesful as the RNY Gastric Bypass.
I am hoping we can all become friends and support each other on the way.

If anyone on here is near the ST.Louis area I would LOVE to hear from you and anyone else for that matter :-)

I am a wife and mother of 2, so I stay pretty busy.

I have started a VLOG on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjqbb2jTkjM

Welcome LaToya, and from what I hear...rest easy in the idea that your surgeon has your best interests at heart.

Also the sooner you get started on your lifestyle changes, the easier it will be to transition after surgery- so GOOD LUCK TO YA!

Hey LaToya,

I cried too!!!  I started out at a 74.4 BMI, and couldn't believe my eyes - I had already been "dieting," so how in the world could I have been THAT heavy?!  Anyhow, I pulled up my big girl panties, and started finding out what I needed to do to get my surgery & hoepfully get my life back.

Even if you cannot have a Banding done - look into VSG - Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy -- it is restrictive without being malabsorptive -- like a band without a band.  Why does RNY seem scary to you?  Ask LOTS of questions!

We are all here to give you support, so feel free to ask anything!!!  There is also State Boards/Forums you can look up your area -- find local support -- just check "GO LOCAL" on the forum pull down menu -- and hopefully you will find a local friend!

Welcome to the group Latoya.

Dry your tears, I was a 64 BMI, six short months after my RNY my BMI is 44, still very high, but over half way to my goal.

Talk to your surgeon about support groups in your area, I am sure you will make friends there.

But also remember the people on this board are your long distance support.

Welcome to the family.

P.S. My business used to take me to the Chrysler plant in Fenton. St,. Louis is one of my all time favorite cities.

Hi LaToya!

Im in MO too just in KC.  I had the duodenal switch almost 4 weeks ago.  It doesnt matter where you start girl, because you won't be there for long.

Im already doing better than expected.

Do your research, talk to patients who have had surgery, and then make an informed decision with your surgeon.

I started this journey just over a year ago, at 300 lbs, and a 54 BMI. I lost 34 pounds pre op and now 80 since VSG surgery at the end of January, for a weight loss of 114 lbs ! My BMI is now at 34 ! I've lost 20 BMI points !!!

I am still losing weight, and am thrilled beyond words at being able to exercise, walk, move and keep up with life. I've gone from a size womans 28 jeans to a misses petite size 16 !! I see a size 14 in my not too distant future.

I have made huge lifestyle changes, and am happy with the changes I made at 55 years old !!!

It is possible to change your world !!!

Mine was very high too.  RNY is wonderful.  I was also told the same thing about the lapband.  Best of luck!
