wow I just discovered you guys, I didn't know this board existed!

Well I'm happy to say my BMI is no longer 55!! woot woot.. my question is about hair, when the hell is it going to stop falling out? OMG I Hate it!! It started about 6 weeks ago.. 3 weeks ago I had it chopped off but it's everywhere; my bathroom floor is covered.  I went to my hospitals support group for the first time ( I won't be back that's another story) and someone told me not to brush may hair more than once a day and to wa**** every other day.. well if you're a blond you know the no washing thing doesn't work but I had a pj day and didn't wa**** yesterday and today I had double the hair come out so that is a myth!!!!   I know there is nothing I can do to stop it.. I'm taking biotin who knows if that really works or not, I am getting in 70 grams of protein a day and my labs are fab.. so nothing I can do but wait.. but what is the average length of time this goes on for??????????

Welcome to this board!!!

I had about 2 and 1/2 months of heavy hair loss and breakage.  It is now growing back but no style seems to work since I have these "short hairs" all over the place.  It bothers me as I dont want my hair any shorter.  I also took biotin before the loss (as my hair doesnt grow very well).  The biotin will not help with the hair loss.  However, it does help with the new hair growth.

Give it time!!

Protein, protein, protein... I am a firm believer in meeting my 100 gram+ a day goal of protein.  I also take Biotin - since before surgery, hoping to help stave off the losses.  Biotin is debatted a lot, but I figure even if it is just ends up in my pee, it wasn't that expensive of a preventative measure.  I am also taking ALL my recommended doses of supplements, and my hair loss has been minor.  Don't get me wrong, it freaks me out, but I think mine is manageable & inevitable.

I am eight months out, and still have most of my long hair.  I did get some cut, but it was a normal trim a couple months back.  My nails are INCREDIBLE, way better than before surgery -- I think it is the protein & supplements I have to thank.

Before surgery I was not a big fan of milk all the time - one glass here, there, was my MO.  I still am not a milk drinker, but make sure I get dairy products as well as protein & supplements.  Hang in there, the hair will level off -- I have three (yes, three) short hairs coming in on my left temple -- but they are WHITE - argh!!!  I have been watching them grow, ha ha ha!  I keep wondering if I will look cool with three platinum hairs?

And this too shall pass ;)  Hang in there!

I'm sorry I don't have any advice for the hair loss. But I see that your in MA. There's a great support group schedule at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. There are meetings offered the 1st and 2nd Thursday of every month as well as the 3rd Tuesday of every month. The meetings are designated as 0-6 months, 1+ year, etc, but we all go to any of them regardless of how long we've been post surg. And the leaders make it clear that all are welcome all the time. The schedule is posted at http://www.nwh.org/clinical-centers/center-for-weight-loss-s urgery/patient-resources/support-group-info/

I don't know where you are in MA, but you're welcome to join us. I'd be happy to meet you there if you ever want to come. I've been slacking on the meetings during the summer, but need to get back on track!

don't you have to have had surgery at that hospital to attend?

No. When talking about the benefits of our peer support groups, the program  coordinator has even said at a few meetings that people from practices that don't offer support groups often attend or people who live far from where their support group meets attend. I just went to a meeting last night. I can verify it for you the next time that I go if you're interested.

For me it lasted about three months. It started falling out 3 months to the day after I had the operation and about three months after that it stopped. The good news is my hair grew back just as thick or perhaps even thicker than before and yours probably will too, so try not to worry about the hair loss, it really is only temporary.
