I suspect going into surgery I will be about 340 pounds and my goal weight is to be about 165/160.....I'm 5'8.

Is it a realistic hope to think I could lose 175 pounds after my RNY?

Absolutely if you apply yourself to eating right and exercising most days of the week.

I was 403, 383 day of surgery.  I lost down to 181, but have regained 20 with the stressors of life.. ****ty stressors lol.  You can do it, just be very firm, stick to the rules.  Use your first 18 months very wisely.

I can do hard things, life is teaching me that I can.

Well, if my experience is anything I think you can.  I have lost 166 lbs in last 15 months and expect to continue to lose for another 4-6 months.  Hopefully, another 40+ lbs.

These are such amazing numbers ladies!  You all have inspired me to believe it is possible.

I get a little discouraged when I see the lighter weights getting down to such low numbers and I wanted to make a realistic goal for myself so that I wouldn't be horribly disappointed.  Truthfully I 'd love to just be under 200 pounds but I do have the hopes of possibly being at a healthy BMI some day.

I know what you mean about lighter weight people.  I just figure they got smarter faster than me.... So had less to lose.  I am a stubborn one and need to be at the end of my rope to commit, but once I commit I go all out.   Being under 200 is something as my goal also.  At 59 I am not out looking for a new body, just better health, happier life and easier movement. I don't expect to be 130 lbs ever like I was in my teen years.  But I am getting a new body, I move easier and I am so much happier.  It is SOOOOOOOO worth whatever I went through the first few months to be in the place I am now.  I know I will still be "obese" at 180 and I will accept whereever my weight loss stops, but anything is so much better than where I was.  JOY is filling my heart now.
