I was just wondering is it O.K. To drink just beef or chicken broth or soup in your preop diet. My surgery is in five days. I,m getting tired of the shakes. I had buy from the doctor. But, Do they really help lose weight off your liver or Does dieting and restricted calories do that. Does any no for sure. It just looks like protein drink to me that you could buy cheaper somewhere else. Does iT help to clean your liver or shink it? I,m nurse and feel stupid for asking. Because, I,m so sick of everything. I would rather drink water until surgery or crystal light.
my liquid diet consisted of any protein shakes i wanted ( I liked the Atkins and Myoplex the best). I was also allowed cottege cheese and 1 tomato. Basicly my surgeon said that as long as i didnt eat tons of carbs and mainly liquids that it would shrink the liver (which it does and it does help with surgery). I was able to lose 39 pounds becuase i was on the liquids for a month and i only got 1 incision where as before the surgery i was going to have 9 and possibly open because of my starting weight. Its hard, but hang in there its almost over.
As I understood it, the preop diet is for rapid weight loss because for some reason that rapid loss comes from around the liver first. This gives your surgeon more room to work. I lost 45 lbs preop and then only had 6 days for preop diet (my date came only one week after approval)
My diet was 4 oz of protein per day (chicken, egg, string cheese)
6 oz fruit or vegtable
2 protein replacement meal ( any shake with 100% whey protein isolate)
1 cup of nonfat milk for shakes one was with water
This was spread over the whole day.
I found a good shake at walmart for $15 per tub
