That is a fabulous question that made me look to see if they may be any Forums that would address this...

I used to watch two shows about obesity, but they aren't airing anymore.  They had extreme patients, and in many cases, I remember seeing compression socks (the air filled ones) being used to address clotting.  Another way to keep it a non-issue is blood thinners.  Lucky for me, I didn't need either (although I ASSUMED I would).

Bed exercise, similar to the ones in chair (usually you can find these on PBS), are most beneficial - blood pumps even when you cannot walk - wink wink!

Have you contacted a doctor about this?  I hope some of this helps.

Although I wasn't in a wheelchair, I was over 500 lbs and had lymphedema in my left leg.  I believe that my surgeon had fears of blood clots.  Because I was in my late 40's at the time and had no other heath problems, he opted to have a vena cava filter put in the day before my surgery and they had the stockings on me for about 12 hours after surgery.

One thing that I do know is that they do get you up and walking as soon as possible.  As I am sure you know asking your surgeon this question is the best .  I wish you all the luck in the world.

 I had my surgery 11/19/2010
BMI was 54
one of my many issues was leg swelling... (we are talking so tight they looked like they would burst)
the day I went into the hospital for the surgery an adorable male nurse hopped up on the bed and put those white stockings one me and as soon as I was placed into recovery the air pump thingys were placed on me and were only removed when I walked and when I went home 2 days later. It helped me so much it is unreal.
I had my surgery and I have degenertative disease in my back and in my knees... my exercise is all very low level however I do all I can as often as I can and my weight losses are up there with others.

I sure hope this helps
if you need more information feel free to message me

I was not in a wheelchair daily tho had to use one for any outside activity.  I too had/have lymphadema pretty seriously for several years and shortness of breath so severe I could not walk over 25-50 feet w/o gasping for air.  I also had a long ago hx of a blood clot in my 30's.  So all this is to say, my doc gave me numerous pro op tests, put me on blood thinners and sub-cutaneous shots for 2 weeks after surgery.  I did have stockings and even the pumped one during surgery.  I have seen women in wheelchairs in his office so I know he has no problems with doing the surgery.  Keep looking around for a reputable doc and ask him/her what the most recent news is about surgery and limited mobility.  Good Luck

Starting wt. March/ 2010  385lbs

I'm new to the site so I'm not sure about surgery if you are in a wheelchair, but to comment about the exercise while chair bound. I ordered some exercise DVDs from http://www.chairaerobics.com/Chair_Aerobics_for_Everyone_Series.html. I have ordered the chair boxing and chair aerobics and enjoy them both. They have many others like salsa and belly dancing. Good luck in your search.
