...stats belong to the DS---*especially* for those of us with a starting BMI greater than 50. The DS is also the very BEST at resolving or preventing co-morbs like diabetes and high cholesterol.

From the research I have seen in medical journals, there is more research done on the RNY gastric bypass than any other single type of surgery.  I am not suggesting that it is better than the DS, but if one is looking at research, and therefore the statistics, the quantity as well as quality of medical research is important.  Everyone needs to seek good medical information from their surgeon as to which surgery will be best for each as an individual.

The RNY has been around longer, so yes, I'm sure there HAS been more research done on the RNY over the years. But in the 22 years that the DS has been around, it's shown consistently better long-term, maintained weight loss, ESPECIALLY for those with higher BMIs.

I am pre-op and in my research have found a TON of information on RNY due to it's explosion of popularity early and mid 2000's.
The DS was originally done as a revision.
After long term results showed that it has the highest long term results, with fewer complications ie: no dumping, can take NSAIDS, no foamies (you RNY'ers know what I mean) can take time released medication, can have carbonated beverages, and I can have cake on my birthday without puking or dumping.. I am sold.

For me it was not the AMOUNT of research, but the results of that research.
I am thankful I did my research.
Some of my reasearch happened right here on OH. I have been reading as many blogs as I can from RNY and DS.
Also the failed surgeries. Have yet to see a failed DS in there.
There is a study out there from the NHIP regarding the surgeries.. it sealed the deal for me.
Hands down.
DS for me. Or nothing.
