Don't be afraid of having an 'open' procedure. I had my DS done open, and it was really no big deal. About 18 months later I had a 'lap' hernia repair, and there really wasn't much difference, pain-wise from the 'open' DS.

As for whether you should have the RNY/bypass or the Sleeve---honestly, *I* think the Sleeve is better. With the RNY, you'll only have malabsorption of calories for about two years, but you will ALWAYS malabsorb vitamins and minerals---ALWAYS. And around two years post-op, the pouch/stoma of the RNY/bypass tends to stretch, greatly increasing the amount you can eat. The Sleeve stretches some, too, but not as much---and if it turns out the Sleeve alone doesn't do all you need, it's VERY easy to revise the Sleeve to a full DS. But revising an RNY/bypass to a DS is VERY risky, and only FIVE surgeons in this whole country can do it.

What reason is he giving youo for not being able to do the RNY/bypass? Maybe you should delay surgery and get a second opinion from a different surgeon.

I am VERY happy with my DS. I'm seven years post-op, and I've had no regrets at all. I'm living a far more 'normal' life than I ever did before surgery.

I really think that you'd be happier in the long run with the Sleeve, but---don't just accept what the surgeon tells you. YOU are the one who has to live with this, not him.

you are right one the bypass and how do I find the surgeons that will do the revision for the sleeve and the risks involved?

Hey There- Personally I think you should only do what you want to do. Listen to your doctors opinion, but do only what you feel comfortable doing. I had my sleeve surgery on 11/10 and I am very happy with it. The sleeve can be done as a 2 part surgery: First the sleeve and then it can be revised to bypass or DS from my understanding atleast. I'm not sure if that is an option for you personally, but it is out there. Everyone has their reasons for choosing the surgery they do. My reason for choosing the sleeve was to avoid all the malabsorbtion issues and I did not want to have my insides rerouted. I know people with the sleeve loose slower than bypass, but I feel that if I loose a little slower I am less likely to put it back on.

Don't be afraid to push your surgery back if you're not ready to sign something.. Surgery is a big decision and I see it's frutrating when that bump in the road comes.

Best of luck to you!!

Hi, I was like you, I had researched the RNY till my computer gave out . But due to some health and other reasons I never completed the program. Now a year later I am starting the process again and after doing my research I have decided that the sleeve with DS is the only way for me to go. Again this has to be your choice, but don't rule it out just because it isn't famliar to you. Research it a little bit. Ask your dr what he thinks is best. Ask him what surgery has less complications, and more weight loss. I think you will be pleasently surprised. Also ask him the mortality rate of each surgery. Take a deep breath girl. Everything will work out. Can't wait to hear how things go, and how much weight you've lost.

.....and the journey begins!!!! -D.
