Didn't meet WLS criteria.

The letter stated that I didn't meet their current critera. They didn't explain what criteria I didn't meet so I called them. Julie(receptionist) told me that my BMI is too high. It's 60 and I have to get it down to 47 and under. I'm 400lbs and 5'8"tall so I did some calculations on how much I have to weight. I've already lost 80IBS over the last few years and I have to loose another 100IBS!! Fuck! why even bother to have WLS if I have to loose weight on my own, and that I will.

Julie did say that I'm still on the waiting list if their criteria broadens. I'm not holding my breath on this anymore. I'm still on the waiting list in Edmonton. I'm still swimming and loosing weigh slowly.  Turning 50 in a few weeks and I want to live longer and I'm doing all that I can but in the same token I'm so very angry at these professionals who seem to not take in account on my  hard efforts to loose the weight. I'm considering writing to the clinic to express my displeasure and frustration about their criteria.  There are people with higher BMI's that have WLS. I can't help being discriminated against because of some ******g BMI chart. Fuck!!

Now I feel good.

I just don't understand this. My BMI was 75 the day I had my DS done.

She is in Canada, they have a different health system. Although they don't seem to be taking her health into account at this very moment!!!

So sorry to hear that...but keep on working on it, you never know what might happen that will change your chances!

Well, if you do write to the clinic, can you get a doctor to write to them and say that he is comfortable performing WLS on you, and that you'd be a good candidate?

So sorry to hear you are going through that - your stats are very similar to mine when I started.  It is so hard.  I was 5'6 and 399.    I hope the criteria (or something!) changes and you are able to have the surgery.  It's not an "easy" fix, but sure does help.  Good luck.

I'm down 120 pounds - thanks to RNY!  Working on the next 25.  Then I'll tackle more...

Is it just your current surgeons criteria, or Canada's criteria???

Maybe check with other WLS patients who have a higher than 50 BMI - they may have some good info to share?

Stay positive!

It's the surgeons criteria.

I know Canada is different.  Is this the nation's critiea or the surgeons.  If it is the surgeon.  I would check with another surgeon.  I had to shop around for someone to do me also.  Most people here in my area limit was 400 pounds.  So if you weighed over 400 pounds they would not do you.  And I hear the waiting list in Canada is horriably long.  Just do not give up Linda!!  You can do it!!  Keep up the good work!

why dont you try to get a refferal for out of the country ****) if your BMI is 60 , at least this is what i have been reading on the Ontario forum that people have done.
If you go into the Ontario forum someone will give you more info on this for sure.

I'm in Canada also but in Ontario not Alberta... I have a BMI of 56 and am scheduled for surgery Sept 22nd. I am not sure how exactly the process works in Alberta but i am sure there is a solution. I would recommend posting your problem on the Alberta forum (if you have not already). Best of luck, if there is anything i can do don't be afraid to ask.
