Scale Frustration...
I had the worst day emotionally yesterday. I have been working towards getting my ten percent loss before RNY surgery for five months now, and the latest weigh in left me almost in tears.
Being positive isn't always easy, but I have been working on my attitude this year. In March I got my starting weight - YIKES! So, I started working on my weight loss. Slowly, I crept, taking off a little here, a little there. I have since changed doctors, but still working toward that 10 percent goal. So far, in five months I have lost an abysmal 17.6 pounds. ARGH!
I have done the math, and know without all the exercise, I should have been averaging three pounds a week. At this rate, I have only been averaging a little more than three pounds a MONTH. For all the great anecdotes - it's still a loss, etc., I am pushing down the frustration, and not picking up the donut ;)
Hopefully, it can be explained by water retention or simple constipation. I will push past this, and succeed. I keep journals, so I know when I look back on this moment, I can say, "Hey Girl! You done well!" To all those others feeling Scale Frustration - don't give up! Maybe next week I will have a pleasant surprise?!

It's so darn frustrating when the scale doesn't move like we want it to. I sympathize. I've been losing the same 30 lbs over and over in the last year.
Are you drinking enough? I tend to hold on the weight if I'm not drinking LOTS of water for Crystal Lite. I like to think of it as washing out the fat....
What are you eating? I'll journal for the next few days if you will. Maybe you aren't getting enough protein or are having too many carbs.

Hey Patty,
First, thanks for the support, I really do appreciate it! Water - not Crystal Lite or sweetened water - I drink a minimum of three litres (I carry the bottle everywhere!). I am staying away from caffeine and artificial sweeteners. I do make green tea ice tea, but drink that spariningly.
The diet has been what I call "passive dieting," I substitute two meals a day for whey or soy protein shakes, and keeping with the low calorie diet, the one meal is usually 300 - 500 calories - tops. I have been making beans, chicken breast, and fish. Been only having red meat once or twice a week, and it is always lean. The interesting thing I learned is that not all dried beans are the same. Navy/white beans & pinto beans are twice the calories without the benefits of more protein or fiber - grrrr! I am also staying away from breads, but occassionally having steel cut oats once in a while. Snacks have been veggies & fruits - complex carbohydrates.
I am seriously hoping I am just retaining water, that the scale will reflect it on next weigh in. Ugh! I am staying possitive, but dang, it is hard...

Go**** sure sounds like you are doing a good job with hydration and your passive dieting. Maybe you are retaining water.
I'm basically doing something similar with Medifast, but you can really use just about any protein shake or protein food. The shake/low carb plan has worked really well for me if I don't add any extra carbs. That even includes "good" carbs like fruit. If I add them in, I don't lose.
I also am wondering if you are eating enough for your activity level. I hear quite often that if you cut back too far, your body tries to compensate and holds on to the fat. Do you log your food somewhere like daily plate that figures out your daily totals for you? Too often my snacks can creep out of control if I don't log them.
Say your one meal is your high of 500 calories, plus 2 shakes @ let's say 150 cal ea/ = 800 calories. That's not much.

Hey Patty,
Hmmm, maybe you are onto something with the too little "fuel". My morning shake is usually 200 calories or more - I mix protein with yogurt giving my body a little extra fuel. The food diary I have been keeping goes back to March, and I have been honest (even those days I go on a dietary vacation, i.e. restaurant or special, "big" meal).
I did curb one habit I think I let go overboard - jawbreakers. I thought I had found a great way to get my sweet fix without chewing (hard candies don't last like jawbreakers) and added calories. Three little jawbreakers is 60 calories, as long as you ONLY suck on three ;) I went back to sugarless chewing gum, as the three turned into six, turned into ten, which made me cut back on the protein shakes -- NOT an acceptable food exchange!
My menses is wonky (as are most obese women), and I thought I was spotting the day I weighed, but those tricky hormones tricked me again! I am hoping that my next weigh in will be free of water retention due to menses, and I will not be constipated (damn my thyroid!).
As for pushing too hard, I will raise my hand to that one. I have a very bad habit of overdoing a good thing. I was swimming up to two hours at a time, two plus miles, but being totally exhausted & unable to do much the rest of the day. Same thing with walking. If one mile is great, why not two or three? I'll tell you why not, I weigh over 450 pounds, have bad feet and a bad ankle, all that pain is debilitating! I need to learn moderation in ALL things ;)
Thanks, really, for the constructive thinking! In my head I always see the scene in Bambi, where Thumper's mom is telling him to recite what he is supposed to do... Yup, that is my way to try to "mother" myself! I swear I want to be a better person, REALLY!

THis isn't the same post I recall seeing before about under-eating (the one I was thinking of was on the DS board), but OH search came up with this version from The Incredible Shrinking Woman.
I tried to paste it here, but had width issues, so you can follow the link... Scroll down to Overcoming Stalls on January 9, 2010 12:45 am

I would not follow the LAST suggestion...
I'm sorry you are struggling!!! I don't understand why we are told our whole lives it is about eating less than we burn and then the math doesn't add up that way!!!
I am so proud of you for your dedication to hanging in there! You will see success. Is it possible there is an underlying medical condition causing the trouble (diabetes, thyroid etc...). Contact me anytime........

Hey Cheryl,
Yeah, I hear you :( I do have thyroid disease, complicated further by hemochromatosis (too mush iron in the blood), and the pain issue -- I am walking around in constant pain - tore the Achilles tendon seven years ago, and "they" couldn't do a proper repair (haha) because of my weight back then. I have plantar facsitiis & arthritis in both feet, but I try to push on. I recently added some new arthritis & pain meds -- trying to get off NSAID's (can't have IB after Gastric Bypass), so maybe that is the new factor...
The thing that is bugging me is that I know how to lose the weight, but I have stalled. Oh well, it has made me more determined to have a better loss this week!
I understand why they want the weight loss before surgery, but dang it, it still is mentally discouraging.
Thanks Cheryl, really!!!
