Well, I did it!!!!!

Oh boy, so much to say and don't know where to begin really. My surgeon warned me that the first 48 hours would be the toughest. No truer words have ever been spoken! The surgery went excellent and the x-rays done the next day after surgery showed no gastric leaks at all. I did have a big complication. Coming out of surgery I was in full DKA. For those of you that don't know what that is, it is a very dangerous thing for diabetics where keytones turn to acid and the acid is running though your body. That landed me in ICU for 2 1/2 days. I had to spend 6 days total in the hospital. I am home now and doing fine. It hurts to move in certain ways but I have just been taking things slow. My surgeon is SO GREAT! He had the DKA taken care of pretty quickly. I have read on here that  many of you had bad problems with gas. I have not had any trouble at all with that! I asked at my preop appointment if I would need Gas-X strips and my doc looked at me funny. He said that  I would not need them. He was right! Other than that, I am glad I am on the other side!  I am figuring out slowly how much protein shake to drink at one time. I don't  want to drink too much! Hope everyone here is doing well.

I'm so happy that your DKA was taken care of quickly ;-)  I'm glad your recovery is going smoothly too.  I'm going to sip on Isopure post-op to get my protein....that is until I can do a thicker shake.  I'm so excited for you!  Please keep us posted about your recovery.  I am very interested in how you do!  My prayers are with you.

Welcome to the dark side... hehe

I'm SO glad you had a wonderful surgeon and good medical attention.  Sounds like a scary process to go through, but it's worked out for you.  Keep us posted!  And don't forget to be patient with yourself and not put too much stock into the scale, mmkay?  The fluctations, especially early out, can be quite wild!

Welcome back!

It's great to see you posting and to hear that (while it was a wild ride) you are home and healing. So awesome that your doc was on top of the DKA.

Glad your home safely now!  I think the problem with gas is mostly for people who have had laparoscopic approach because they inflate your belly to make room for their tools.  But if they open you up they can just move it all out of the way.  :)

The first week is rough, but it will get better.  I remember thinking OMG what did I do to myself?!  And thinking I would never feel normal again.  But 2.5 months out I am feeling more like my old self and down over 80 lbs!  :D  Just take it one day at a time and sip sip sip that isopure or any protein you can tolerate.  don't forget to ge****er in too.  (H2o)

PM me if you wanna talk sometime!  :)

Glad to hear you are OK now.  In 3 months you will look at this as a mere bump in the road.  I never need Gas X and besides it does not work well to me anyways.
