Distract yourself
Daily Inspiration for July 19, 2010
Distract yourself.
Eating out of boredom or to relieve anxiety can be a big problem for WLS patients. To avoid grazing for these reasons, you simply need to distract yourself. Distracting yourself means finding something to do or think about that is absorbing enough to put food out of your thoughts for awhile.
Other than food, what do you enjoy doing? Watching a movie? Calling a friend? Taking a walk? Organizing a closet?
Action for the day: In your journal, make a list of distractions that seem fun, interesting, and/or consuming for you. Post your list on the refrigerator and read it whenever you feel like grazing. Pick one or two distractions and give them a try.

Being aware has helped me. When I have a dramatic moment, instead of reaching for food, I tell myself to "WAKE UP!" I found that my eating out of frustration or boredom was very much like being asleep at the wheel.
Writing in my journal seems to help me sort through my moments of weakness. Be A Lert - the world needs more LERTS! Corney, but it works for me ;)
