Introducing Protein Shakes/dumping ?

Had my 1 week follow up last night and was able to introduce protein shakes, so I tried it out last night.  I got sooo sick!  Was it dumping??  I was fine for awhile then I felt like an instant nausea when it hit a certain point in my stomach/intestine.  I started dry heaving 3-4 times before I turned the fan on full blast on myself and just breathed through it.

Think I drank it too quickly, partly because I thought it's a liquid, and as long as I don't overrfill my pouch it's okay.  Was partly excited to have something new.

Now I am scared to death to try it again!

Anyone else have this experience with intro of protein shakes?  Any advice?  just slower, smaller introduction?

hi hun.... i will tell u for the first few months i had the same problem.. what it was for me was the shakes were just to thick... my new tiny tummy couldnt handle them no matter how slow i sipped or what brand... shakes didnt work for me... so i drank isopure  it truly saved my life... some ppl cant stand the after taste but with all protein supplement drinks theres an aftertaste..  they are expensive but when u think its all the food we are getting in the first few weeks.. its less then we ever spent on food... www.theisopurecompany.com/drinks.php

Thanks!  I might give it a try, even if the shakes do work!

Yep, pretty normal- just sip slowly and make sure that you're mixing them with anything that might make you dump, like milk.

Take it easy!

I was bad about drinking things too fast early out. You really have to sip, sip, sip for at least a month! Eventually, I got to the point where I could "chug" stuff again (nothing like preop though).

AND even now I have a difficult time choking down cold milky protein. I do drink the Premier Protein drinks from Costco. They're vile, but I look at those as medicine (30 g protein). Some folks here on OH have perfected a whole slew of shake recipes (Cleopatra Nik on the RNY forum has a bunch), but I just can't partake.

However, when it finally warms up (I can't believe it's 64 degrees at noon on the Friday before Memorial Day here in the Mojave Desert), I'm gonna make some protein ice cream. Eggface has a whole bunch of recipes. I can't access it here, but she has a blog called the World According to Eggface.

Isopure is great - try a bottle. Where you're at now, it should take most of a day to get down the 20 oz. They also make smaller bottles, but you have to buy a 6-pak.

I also tried Nectar. It's not my fave, but there's nothing milky about it.

Good luck. It gets better the further postop you are.

How much did you drink?

I had horrible horrible diarrhea the first few weeks post op.  Protein drinks, water, crystal light, etc. - it all ran right through me.  I sipped extremely slowly and drank very little.  I was really freaked out that my bowels may always be that messed up.  But slowly as I began to introduce new foods, things started to stick with me better.  Protein drinks were miserable the first few weeks.  Sure wish I would have known about how to drink them warm back then.  May have went down better than the cold?

Hang in there and know that it gets better.

I only like the Twisted Cherry flavor of Nectar - it's like koolaid.  I use GNC Pro Performance Whey 28 for my other drinks (chocolate or vanilla).   Other than the Nectar, about 80% of the time I like them warm (hot chocolate made with choc protein and milk/water, or a chai latte with vanilla protein).  Now that it's summer and warm drinks don't sound as appealing, I'm sticking with Nectar.
