Endoscopy/Stomach Biopsy

Well, my last hurdle before gastric bypass surgery was conquered yesterday. I had my endoscopy. He also took a biopsy from my stomach. He said that he did not see anything that would prevent me from having surgery. He said that I cannot eat for 48 hours following the biopsy. 24 down, 24 to go....augh! Anyone else have to  do this?

Well I had the endoscopy and it was one of the worst experiences of my life! I was awake the whole time choking on the tube and the nurse was yelling at me "Breathe"  and I was crying- thinking "I can't breathe you're choking be B****!" I was so not a happy camper! But it's over and I got my surgery and it saved my life :D

Yeah they told me they were going to give me something to help me relax, but I have a feeling they didn't take into account that I was almost 400lbs and maybe needed some extra meds!

I have a potentially stupid question. What is the purpose of the endoscopy? In the papers I received after my consult with the doctor detailing the different clearances I would need for surgery - there was no mention of needing an endoscopy. So I am just curious.

I have had an endoscopy before and it wasn't horrible - they gave me enough to knock me out, thankfully. I remember the lady putting the bite block in and then I woke up crying. The colonoscopy was something of a different story though...I had five people trying to get an IV line [for anesthesia] in different veins at once, including the anesthesiologist who thought my feet were fair game...I’m surprised I still don’t have holes in my tongue from biting it so hard from not telling some of those people to go play in traffic…Ugh!

I swear sometimes I think medical professionals think that just because we are bigger certain things don't/won't hurt us as much as they would an 'average' sized person...
