weight did you need to lose before surgery? My clinic has a weight limit and I am just wondering how much weight you needed to lose before surgery.

My surgeon said that I needed to lose 30 lbs to make the surgery safer, but have heard that he will let it go with have that amount still.  But if it really is a  safety factor, I didn't want take any chances.  I heard of some that don't require a loss and some that require 50 lbs, really depends on your surgery and whether you are having laparoscopic or open.

Yeah it's a health and safety issue, I had to lose 50lbs- and I did. Though some places you don't have to lose any weight, it depends on where you go. Sounds like you have to...and you can!

Thanks, you two. I had to lose 96.5 and have about 80 left. It's just so tough. Hopefully this will make it easier to transition into my post op routine.

My doc didn't have a set amount that he wanted you to lose on the 2 week pre-op liquid diet.  I also didn't need to lose a set amoutn on my 6 month PCP monitored diet - in fact, I wasn't allowed to lose much, otherwise insurance wouldn't have covered surgery.  Go figure!
Highest:  380 / Surgery Day:  344 / Current:  203.8 / Goal:  ~180 / Total Loss:  176.2

It really depends on your surgeon. My dr wanted me to be 500lb the day of surgery, but I made it to 540 and did alot of talking to convince him I was ready lol

I had started losing weight in March and my surgery was done in Dec so I had been working on it for a long time. I understand it is tough, but my dr told me, if your body is working at the weight it is now, taking off any weight at all will just make it even easier for your body to function.

You are correct, it will make your post op life easier. I started changing the way I eat way before the surgery and it really did help. Breaking bad habits voluntarily makes it easier than when you don't have a choice. It's just one less thing to worry about after the surgery is done.

You can do it!
