Well, I've been particularly stressed these last 2 weeks and I'm eating too much and I know it.  Not at one sitting - can't hold that - but too often and some are the wrong choices.  So, maybe this will help me get a grip:

Already had today:
B: 1 lg egg + 1 oz 96% fat free diced ham (Microwaved together) with 1 slice of 2% American Cheese melted on top.
S: Med Banana + 1tbs mayonnaise
L: 3.5 oz grilled center pork chop
S: small apple with 2 tbs reduced fat peanut butter

Plan to have tonight:
D: 3-4 oz grilled chicken breast tenders
S: Protein supplement drink

Calories: 1040 (that's a good 200 calories above what I usually do and my body is usually perfectly satisfied with..grrrrrr...till my HEAD HUNGER gets in the way...which is driven by stress...and I gotta get a grip! )
Protein: 104

And I hope to heaven that will be it.  I had gotten to the point that the only snack I had during the day was at night and it was always my supplement.  I'm changing jobs and the pressure is on to hand-off my duties to someone not quite qualified to handle them; but I'm trying to make it work.  I need to get back to journalling my foods - that has always been a HUGE tool for me, but time has been in short supply for the past 2 weeks with me working 10 and 12 hour days.

Connie..

I am sorry you are under so much stress.. Stress is one of the main reasons all of us eat more.. I hope this helps you get straightened out and I hope the stress situation at work gets better..

It at least  looks like you are doing pretty good with choices.and the protein is great.. .I hope that posting on here what you eat will help you..  I am a newbie compared to you.. I am only 5 months out but I still journal every thing I put in my mouth.. If I didn't I would have no idea what I had eaten and would eat too much..

I was having the same problems with head hunger. Mine is at night. I actually have to read or work a crossword puzzle or circle words puzzle when I watch TV or I would go nuts wanting to eat.. TV seems to be my trigger to eat.. I have had to learn to deal with it.. But man head hunger can be awful..

Since I have been posting on here I have done a lot better.. I plan out my day and then I stick to it.. The drinks and the food and yes even the exercise.. I tell myself that I wrote it down that I was going to do it so I have to follow thru.. it helps me..I may not get to put it on here as early as I would like to but I always have it planned out on paper for the day and try to get it posted when I can get on line... I do eat snacks but they are included in my 800 calories or less plan.. maybe you can try to eat things little lower in calories in order to have the snacks while you are under stress.. I really am not sure what the answer is.. but I am hoping this thread will help.. journaling your eats will really help whether you list them on here or not..

It will be hard to do all this with working so many hours, but your eating needs get back on track.. So what ever you have to do.. make a little time to journal your eats...

I will pray for you that the stress will ease up at work. I will also pray that you will be able to get back on track and feel better about your eating habits..  let us know how things are going..
I know this is not an easy feat when stress gets in the way.. but YOU CAN DO THIS....

huggs..

Thanks Teresa!  I do agree the mayonnaise and peanut butter (reduced fat or not) are the culprits in my food choices yesterday...they are definately from the dark side!  And it did help to write down on this forum what I planned to finish my day off with - I stuck to it.  I like the idea of planning ahead for a day of eating, but that has never worked out for me for some reason.   But I feel a little more in control today, so maybe it'll be better.

Maintaining control over my food choices feels like a slippery line I'm trying to hand onto, so I just have to dig my heels in the ground and hold onto for dear life to keep from sliding back into my old grazing habits.  Because at 10 months post-op, I can tolerate a lot wider range of foods and slightly more volumn - so the opportunity to allow my calories to slide up-up-up is growing.  And I still have 90 pounds to loose.

Sometimes when I 'want' to put something in my mouth and I realize my body is not hungry, I tell myself:  "Once you get to where you're going, there will be a slightly wider range for calories and the occassional white carb (which are POISON for me with regard to weight loss).  If you hang in there, you should make that goal sometime late this year or early next year.  You can do without anything for that long.  Then, you can work on learning how to snack and consume a few white carbs sparingly in your diet plan.  But not yet.  Just wait.  It'll come."

I don't know, maybe that's the wrong message, but I have a friend who had the surgery 2 years before me, made it way below her goal, and has maintained it for 2 years.  She is the one who told me you can eat a little more once you've reached your goal.  Her motto is ' a little bit of anything won't hurt you, but it has to be just a little, used judiciously, and you have to keep moving your body.'  So....that's what I'm working toward:  the day when I can rest assured that I can have just a little bit of anything I want/tolerate occassionally.

Thanks for the pep talk!  And for listening!  connie

Connie,

I think you have a good grip on things.. You know the plan.. You know the good and the bad. Most all of us seem to know the good and the bad.  The hard part is to stay away from the bad and to stick to the amounts we know we can have.. We all struggle with this.. ALL OF US... There are many who make it seem like they just float through the day with no problems.. No hunger, no head hunger. never any slip ups, never eat any carbs, never never never.. Well I am not sure if anyone can ever say never.. It is so easy to have a bad day or be under stress or be tempted when out running errands..to say I will have just a little of the wrong things or I'll do it  just this once is a great way to talk yourself into slipping back into bad habits.. ... We all face the struggles.. The real control is up to us and that was not given to us in our surgery.. We have to be in control.. anything that can be used as a tool, along with our tool given to us by our surgeons, that can help us maintain control is good.. For me it is planning the day and sticking to it.  I hope this will work for you too.. at least until you get over this hump.. I even plan when I am going out.. I have a list of places I can eat and what I can have.. I choose from them what I am going to eat ... I have to work at it everyday and yes it takes time to do but without planning I would be off track everyday..

I hope your stress lets up on you.. Stress can cause you to retain weight and also even cause you to gain weight.. no matter what you eat.. It releases the dreaded cortisol into the system and that will tell the body to hold onto anything you put in it.. It will cause the foods to be used differently and can actually make a good food act like a bad food.  So don't be too hard on your self during the stressful times.. Just stick to the right foods and exercise and hang on until the stress lets up.. Try relaxation techniques at night when you are away from your job..  They can help relieve some of the stress and may trigger the stopping of the release of cortisol..

I think you are right to look at the rewards you will be allowed after reaching your goal.. Yes you will be able to expand your food types.. by then you will be on more calories too.. they increase the farther out from surgery you are.. But remember like your friend said .. all things in moderation.. that will be a thing you will live with all of your life.. but a bite of something you want can satisfy you.. and you may find that by then the things you crave and want now may not even appeal to you..  I  am looking forward to being able to make all those great recipes I see on here.. I know it will be awhile but it gives me something to look forward to.   Rewards are a great motivator.. so I do not think you are wrong for looking forward to that..

Hun, you do not have to thank me for listening to you and for pep talks.. That is what we are all here for.. We all need pep talks at different stages and for different reasons.. I too seek them out when needed.. As far as listening.. I am always here.. I may not always know the right things to say back and being a newbie too (only 5 months out) I do not know all the answers but I always try to help with the knowledge I have gained over the last 5 years from listening to the old timers.. the veterans on here and on the other forums are invaluable to us all.. but as far as support and encouragement I give all I can.. You do too... I read your remarks you write to people and they have encouraged me so many times.  I thank God everyday for OH friends.. They help everyday.. even when they do not know it, someone is reading what they wrote to someone else and it is helping them too..

I am saying prayers for you to get out from under the stress.  Keep on going with what you are doing now... You are on the right path... so now you just have to stay on it.. no detours allowed.. lol..

huggs....
