After surgery question

First, I have to tell you all, this is my favorite board!  It is always the first place I go when I log onto OB.  Second, I am trying to figure out something for when I come home from the hospital.  For the time being, we only have one bathroom in our home, and it is upstairs.  Our stairs are a little steep.  I have talked to my mother-in-law to see if I can stay there if I need to, but my question is, how long before you could do stairs after surgery?  I would really rather go home, but not sure that is realistic.  Any input would be helpful.  Thanks!

I was told that I could do stairs as soon as I got home, but you should definitely ask your doctor. I had the same problem and it took a long time to get upstairs initially so you may want to stay with your MIL for a few days just to make it easier.

I slept upstairs and it was no problem doing them.  My bet is that if you have serious mobility problems now you may want to make temporary accommodations, but if you get around well, I wouldn't think you'd need to.

I walked myself out of the hospital and then up the stairs when I got home. Try and do all of your upstairs business in the morning and then you won't have to go back and forth throughout the day, just back up for bed. Also remember, you don't have to sprint up and down. Take a few at a time and rest in between!
Good luck!

I guess my issue is that it is the bathroom-so I will have to go up and down several times a day.  Thanks for the input everyone.

We have a 2 story house, so there are 14 stairs to get upstairs.  I was able to do them right away but just took it very slowly.

Good question. The same day after bariatric surgery, you will be asked to stand or walk and to continue to take short walks during your recovery time in the hospital. You should not drive for about two weeks or longer if you are still taking post-surgical medication that makes you drowsy. Depending on the type of bariatric surgery, patients typically go back to work in one week to six weeks. Many patients are back to a physically normal routine about six weeks after bariatric surgery.

I was able to do stairs no problem, but I thought I would add that some of those trips to the bathroom will need to be made rather quickly, if you know what I mean.
