recliner having surgery soon
Hi All I am having surgery on April 6th and I was told a recliner would be great for recovery from surgery. What kind of recliner? I got a lane recliner(recliner and a half) but it does not work for me ....I already had a malfunction and I just got it today.....What kind of recliner did you get? Thanks for any information you can give me.....
I was fine without a recliner, too.
They gave me an stretchy band around my tummy, and it made me feel secure and i could turn and stuff with that on.

depends on the type of surgery really... i had open RNY an i couldnt sleep in my bed for atleast if not longer then 2 weeks... i got an over sized lazy boy an its over a yr old an still in perfect condition.. an its like a love seat to me now lol but i love it..my hubby an i both can snuggle in it an watch movies now since losing 150+ lbs.. so im still getting my use out of it.. but i couldnt lay flat in the bed for a few weeks cuz of the incision straight down my belly from my breast bone to my belly button.. then once i could lay flat it hurt like hell to get up was easier getting in an out of recliner.. but if ur having laproscopic i wouldnt worry.. to much not that it will be easy.. just smaller incisions.. ya know? good luck...
I did not need a recliner when I got home.. I was like Patti and sleep on my side.. I did however have to have help getting out of bed.. I kinda rolled out instead of trying to sit up first.. I have a recliner and thought I might need it but I found pushing the foot rest down on the recliner to get up hurt worse then rolling out of bed. so I still had to have help.. this only lasted for a few days.. after that I was fine.. I had laporoscopic bypass so I did not have a big incision like with open RNY.. if you are having it done laporoscopically you should be fine.. I never took one thing for pain after getting home from the hospital..
I have had back surgery with a scar from the waist to the top of the butt crack and did fine in bed.. I had a surgery that opened me from the waist to the pelvic area and did fine in bed after that.. I had gallbladder surery and did fine in bed after that.. I did however use a wedge pillow after the back surgery because laying flat on my back seemed to pull on the area and elevating my legs helped.. it was becasue I had to sleep on my back then and could not lay on my side.. but with all the other surgeries I layed on my side and was fine.. believe me you will not roll over because that will wake you up..
If you feel like you will need a recliner than fine but going out and buying one especially for this seems like a waste.. If you just bought the recliner you have and it has a problem already you need to return it.. I have owned many in my time and only one was like that and no matter what they did it never worked right.. I finally got a replacement but I wish I had just returned it to begin with..
An option is also to rent one.. unless you just want a recliner for afterwards.. you can rent the ones that raise up and help you get up too.. they are great and I had to use one during one of my illnesses and I loved it ,, but I didnt love the price so I just rented one..
The decision is yours but I think you will be ok without one unless you have absolutely no pain tolerance or are having an open bypass..
Congratulations on your upcoming surgery..

I had open RNY surgery and slept in a recliner (I already had a LaZBoy) for several weeks post-op. After that, I had to sleep on my back in bed for a couple more weeks. I had lap gallbladder removal, though, and did not need to sleep in a recliner afterwards.
If your brand new one does not work, you should be able to get a replacement from the store...

I used a recliner, I rented it... just make sure you get one that has a HANDLE to raise and LOWER the foot rest..... my brother's recliner wouldn't work for me because to lower the foot rest I had to pu**** in with my feet.

Just go to a Rent-A-Center, Aarons, or something similar and try them out. They deliver and pick up the chair. It's cheap, really, and can help with more than just sleep.
