Can't...possibly...take...another...sip...

I'm exactly 1 week out and I'm not even close to meeting my protein or h20 goals. I wake up completely full and every sip I take makes me feel closer and closer to tossing my shake. This absolutely terrifies me. my drainage hole still hasn't closed up and I'm afraid to re-open any part that has healed, not to mention the pain. GOD the pain. I called my surgeon today and spoke with the nutritionist whose advice was to make sure to get all my protein. Well, thanks, that helped. I called to tell you I'm going to vomit if I take another sip of any liquid whatsoever.. I'm completely FULL. to the point of pain and feeling a back-up in my esophagus. Have more shakes and drink the protein snack drink sounds like a swell solution. I'm trying my hardest. Have any of you hit this wall and if so, how did you overcome it? Did it take long? I really want to get all my fluids and protein in. I'm scared of the damage I'm doing by not getting it all.

Hi Twi, I can say I did not eat ANYTHING for about 2 weeks after my surgery. THis includes protein shakes. NOTHING.....Anesthesia has that affect on me, BUT, I did get in water...SipSipSip...Walk Walk Walk....Not getting enough protein in the couple of weeks, are not going to hurt you....Your tummy is in crisis mode. Work on the water...Soon you will feel like drinking that shake...For now, take it easy..Just my opinion.

sorry to hear ur nut wasnt more sympathetic or informative.. i couldnt do protein shakes at all for a few months after surgery flavord water was fine tho.. an i found isopure protein waters they saved my life literally... 40 g protein per 20 oz ......only way i got my protein in for the first few months... they have an after taste but they stayed down..  shakes were too thick an tooo sweet for me.. sometiems still are... i get quesy just thinking bout downing one... isopure waters are expensive but when u think about 2 of them being all u eat all day its not a bad price... protein is important for the healing process.... thats why ur told to try to get it in...

I've been there. 11 mos out and I still can't handle much of a cold, milky protein shake.   I do drink chai tea with vanilla protein powder and milk almost everyday.

I totally agree with Peggy. Try the Isopure zero carb.I still drink them. You can buy them at GNC or the Vitamin Shoppe. I've even bought a case of the 8 oz ones on Amazon and had it delivered to work.

I think it's a rare person that can make protein and water goals early out. Just do your best. I couldn't drink plain water for about a month. Crystal Light helped me out. When that became too sweet, I squeezed some lemon juice into water. Try Lemon Zinger tea.

But this is really important -- sip slowly. I have always been a chugger. And I tried to do that postop -- didn't work.

Best of luck.

Cold protein drinks immediately post op grossed me out (though I did like cold water).  Once I figured out how to make some "protein hot chocolate" and "protein vanilla chai lattes" things got much better.  Don't settle for crappy protein - it's not worth it.  There is such a huge scale of them out there, you're bound to land on one you can at least tolerate eventually.

Above all you need to stay hydrated - take tiny sips very frequently and be patient with yourself.  I know it sucks.  Right after surgery the thought of putting things in my mouth made me wanna gag.  It DOES get better, I promise!  :)  Hang in there.

Hey Sweetie, I am so sorry you're having such a hard time and I agree with all the advice here. It may just be that your pouch is still so swollen from the surgery that there is truly no room for anything except the tiniest sip of liquid every 10 minutes or so.  I would try to test that theory.  Use water bottles or something so that you can keep accurate track of how much you are drinking and try very tiny sips every 10 minutes or so.  If you can get 2 Isopures in through the day and count that in your water allotment, and don't worry about eating anything until your pouch is better able to handle it, maybe that could work for you.

If that doesn't make it better then I only have one other thought to offer:  if you feel like the liquids you are trying to get in are met with resistance, that is to say, they won't go through (something different than they make you sick, or you don't like the taste) then it's possible you might have some outlet/stoma issues.  The nut is not the person to talk to about this...take it straight to the surgeon.  So, if you think this is the case, then I would urge you to CALL HIM and make an apt to go in or something.

Good luck and let us know how you do!  connie

Thanks for the advice!!! I will definitely go out and get some isopure. Taste doesn't really bother me, it's just the fullness but I was able to sip down 30 oz of water today at room temperature. I think that cold things bother me more than warm because in the hospital I was able to put away some broth. I really do appreciate the advice and understanding you ladies have given me. It's so nice to know I'm not the only one. I thought I was some kind of a failure but now know that it just happens.

I just want to add that I could barely drink water for the first couple of weeks.  I added Crystal Light to it just to get it down.  And for protein, I drank the Profect protein bullets.  They are only three something ounces and easy to get down relatively quickly.

It really does get better and eventually you will be able to take much bigger sips with no back up.  Hang in there!
