New to this board :)
Hi All!
I'm new to this board. I am currently in my 2nd month of my "supervised" weight loss as required by my insurance company.
Does anyone have any tips or advice that they can share to keep me going? I'm finding myself feeling a little discouraged at times when it comes to choosing what to eat.
I had my first appointment with my surgeon on 1/25/10 and my weight then was 409.
Had my 2nd one on 2/22/10 and I was down to 399 so he was very pleased with the loss for the first month, but now I've got it in my head that I might not be able to keep the "good" numbers up as far as the amount of weight lost.
My "support" at home hasn't been very supportive the last few weeks either, and I'm sure that's affecting me as well.
Help!

Welcome!
You're already doing a lot better than I did on my supervised weight loss!
All I can say is hang in there. Try to avoid Last Supper Syndrome as long as you can - chances are you will get to eat this stuff again, just in much reduced quantities.
What has always helped me the most in losing weight (other than RNY, that is) is physical activity. If you're up to it, try walking a little bit. The next day walk a little bit more, and so on and so on. Take it easy, no marathons until you're a year postop.
Drink a lot of water. Try to eat protein first, then veggies, then carbs. Cut down on the carbs. Try to stay away from goodies.
I don't have much to say about support at home (I have a skinny husband, underweight daughter and a carb addict diabetic mother at home). But out of sight, out of mind works for me. If they bring garbage food into the house, leave the room while they're eating it. If they leave it on the counter, put it away before it starts calling you.
YOU CAN DO HARD THINGS -- HECK, you're already doing it.

Use Code: TouchstoneGA12 to get your OH conference tickets for $49.00 It sounds like you are doing great already! Keep up the good work. Make sure to get your protein in; get yourself used to it now so that afterwards you will be in the habit. Also, walk, walk, walk or exercise any way you can. Remember to eat low fat and sugar free also. Best of luck to you! Keep us updated.
Pre-surgery I tried out some things I knew I would do after surgery. I stopped drinking with my meals and did a couple of liquid days to prepare for my liquids phase. I also bought some baby spoons and ate my full size meals with them. For me it was more attitude change and I didn't lose much before my pre-surgery liquid diet. You've already done way better than I did.
I also lined up some extra support people at meetings and with friends. So I could spread out my complaints and tell everyone about my victories.

It probably seems impossible now but hang in there - you can do it! You've already done the hardest part: committing to losing and you've already started losing. I actually gained weight on my supervised diet but now I'm approved for surgery and doing well on my pre-op liquid diet. I have a relatively non-supportive family as well. They say the right things but then they bring ice cream and chocolates and chips into the house. I try to ignore the temptation and plow ahead. Knowing you're making progress on the ultimate goal may help you, it certainly helps me. Also the folks on this site are SUPER supportive so when you feel stressed try logging in and reading the forums, that has helped me since I found this nice place. Just remember you are doing this for you! Best of luck, Janice
I pre-surgery as well, and similar in weight... I am having a lot of the same feelings. I have been doing one or two days a week of the liquid diet shakes between 9am-6pm, and then a "normal" dinner after that, that seems to help me some, keep loosing a bit before I goto the liquids stage before surgery.
Good luck! We can do this!

You are doing fantastic... don't get discouraged.. just keep on trying.. you are making a great start on this journey.. but remember it is a journey and will not all be accomplished in the 6 month supervised diet..
10lbs in one month is fantastic but yes the loss will vary as you go.. we loose a lot of water weight right at first.. I lost an average of 7lbs a month during my preop supervised diet..some months I lost 10 and some I only lost 2 or 3.. actually 1 lb a week is GREAT for pre op.. so please don't get discouraged and give in to temptations.. this is something you are doing for you and to be healthy and live a longer life to be here with your family.. keep you mind and eye on the goal of surgery and don't worry how many lbs are coming off each week or each month.. the insurance companies would love to see you give up.. I think they are hoping half of the people who want wls will not follow through.. so don't give them the satisfaction.. I set my mind into a winning mode to beat the insurance at their game.. that helped me.. I also had a great support system at home and I needed that but my hubby was gone most of the time and I was home alone with no one there to keep me accountable.. I had to do it on my own and not cheat.. I did start going to a support group way before my surgery.. there are many of them that are on supervised diets too not just post surgery... I would suggest to find on in your area and start going.. they are really a lot of help.. and you can be accountable to them each month as to staying with the program and how much you loose.. but whether you loose one month or not they are still there to cheer you on and be encouraging.. so please ask your surgeon about a support group.. we are here for you too. we will support you here on OH good or bad months or good or bad weeks or good or bad days.. ... so you don't have to have a great support at home to do this.. it can be done without it.. seek support other places and be self supportive too..
Hey a great wow moment passed and I hope you caught it and recognized it for a great milestone .. you are under 400lbs.. yippee.. make sure you look for the milestones along the way.. big or little they all count and really help in the esteem dept.. set mini goals too and try to achieve them.. do not set too tough of goals just little ones..
My pre op supervised diet lasted 9 months.. (insurance) I lost 67 lbs in that time before surgery..I ate between 800 and 900 calories a day.. (do not do this unless Dr supervised..) I stopped drinking ANY soda .. not even diet.( you will have to do this after surgery so start now) I drank a lot of crystal light and water.. 64oz at least per day. (get used to this you have to do that after surgery too).. . I stopped eating anything that had over 5 grams of sugar in it.. I didn't eat anything with more that 200mg sodium.. I did not use any salt for seasoning.. I used Mrs. Dash Table Blend..
I ate only 6oz of meat a day, mostly chicken and turkey divided among the 3 meals.. ..(not lunch meats-too high in sodium)..
2 serving of fresh fruit (avoid all canned unless you can buy in its own juice or made with splenda
3 servings of no salt added vegs(or fresh or frozen fresh with no salt.) 2cups per day of dairy..(skim milk or carbmaster yogurt (sugar is high in yogurts so watch out..carbmaster is not too high in sugar and low carbs too.. .
As far as carbs I ate 4-6 servings.. you need some carbs because that is where you get your energy from but eat the right carbs... oats, grits, whole grain pasta, brown rice, whole wheat bread if any, shredded wheat cereal......(potatoes, squash, sweet potatoes and corn count as carbs not vegs)..beans and lintels but not canned.. avoid taco shells, sugar coated cereals, ready to eat cereals except shredded wheat or puffed rice with no salt. (usually comes in bags) biscuits, bagels bread sticks.croutons, raisin bread, muffins. pita bread, no white breads at all, baked beans, spaghetti or pasta sauce unless it is Walden Farms brand., crackers, pretzels, rice cakes, popcorn made with oil or microwave popcorn. hot air is ok but no salt on it.. , there are a lot of carbs to avoid..
Ok there are free foods you can have that are not limited to an amount. they include Sugar free Popsicles, decaf coffee, sugar free drink mixes (crystal light and koolaid) , flavored water(non carbonated), tea decaf or herbal, lemon juice. lime juice, vinegar, flavored extracts, garlic powder, herbs, Mrs. Dash seasonings, pepper, salt substitutes. sugar substitutes.. I recommend splenda so no intestinal upset..
AVOID all processed foods in a can box or package, casseroles, frozen dinners, pizza, pot pies, canned soups, sub sandwiches, french fries.. and any and all chips and other junk foods..
no pastries..
I am not telling you that you need or have to follow this diet I am just telling you what I did for 9 months.. was it easy NONONO.. but I did it and I am so proud I did.. I had a great start on my weight loss and a new way of life for after surgery.. It made the transition very easy.. now just 3 months out of surgery and I am already down 100lbs from my highest weight before the supervised diet.. It sounds like what you are doing is working bu****ch your salt.. it will cause you to retain water and loose slow..
You can private message me from my profile page any time and I will give you some meal ideas if you need them .. I will help anyway I can..
As far as staying encouraged.. keep coming on here as much as possible.. and look forward to telling us your accomplishments no matter how small.. staying accountable helps.. once a week there is a thread on here as to how we did that week.. join in.. you do not have to have had the surgery to report .. it really helps me to know I am going to share how I did for the week.. if you only know your weight once a month that is ok you can still report how you did with the diet and how you feel.. and try to find a monthly meeting support group to go to also.. Look for the aha moments.. they are there and we miss so many.. little ones all count..
YOU CAN DO THIS... YOU ARE DOING THIS... I AM PROUD OF YOU...

I started a bit higher than you and had so many of the same worries!
I actually started doing protein shakes instead of meals pretty early on to help me lose weight. That seemed to help a lot -- I lost 75 pounds pre-op.
It is a hard journey -- it gets easier after surgery (or so far it seems to have for me, but even now I have had stops and starts on the weight loss).

Thank you, EVERYONE for all of the words of encouragement and food ideas!
I plan on trying a few protein shakes this weekend, and also making better "meal" plans.
i have a goal of losing 50 lbs in 6 months...if i keep it up i dont see how it can't happen....
maybe i'll surprise myself and lose more than that!
