excersise in the beginning
I bought bike pedals that you can use with whatever chair is comfortable, and you can also put it on a table and pedal. I can't bike with my legs for long because my knees get achey, but my surgeon suggested doing small bursts with the knees to strengthen them. I have a lot less knee pain since I started and can do up to 20 minutes at a time now. I can get aerobic heart levels with the arm pedaling. It's small, so it works out pretty well for me :)

Honestly, I have gone all out with my exercise. I started at 350. I am big into weight training. I really think it is key for weight loss.
I am a little over 3 months out and do a weight lifting class, kick boxing, Zumba, and work with a trainer.
I also like the elliptical. It is not hard on the knees.
Do what you can and work your way up. But challenge yourself. You have to get outside of your comfort zone in order to really change.
