So what does one do for excercise at over 500 pounds. When walking across the room seems like a marathon???? The PT I saw for my pre-op says 25 minutes a day broken up into 4 min segments. Even 4 min seems insermountable.....I am discouraged and dont really know where to start. Any ideas are welcome. I do water aerobics three days a week.

I'm short and was up to 440, plus I have pulmonary hypertension and get out of breath and oxygen desaturates easily.

What I did is buy one of those bikes that you can place on the floor or on a table. My surgeon said even just 1-2 minutes, like during commercials, several times a day would be good. I can now do 15 minutes at a time on the legs and up to 20 minutes arms, but it has taken MONTHS to get there.

They cost between $35-$150 depending on where you get them and the features.

I figure anything will help at this point. Baby steps is okay.

i was 453 when i started BMI 75ish.. an i did things like sit an be fit excercises and resistence bands.. every lil bit helps no one is expecting u to do aerobics or yoga at this point.. but even just walkin in place for 2 mins a few times a day is better then nothing will build up ur stamina an increase ur heart rate an boost ur metabolisim..  just take it slow an find what works for u... after losing some weight i even got a  recumbent bike.. an i love it..  u can do it..

Well my 2 cents worth. I was 80.3BMI at 463 pounds when I had my bypass. Depending on how many options you have for PT offices. I would call around till you find one that has a pool in it with a PT person experienced in larger weight patents. They all will like to say they are but reality is you need to find someone that works for YOUR needs. I went through 4 diff PT offices in my town rill I found one that was compassionate and understanding of my needs. Then I went hunting for a place to live where there was a pool and whirlpool that I had daily access to. I stretched every day till I lost weight. Then started to be more mobile in the water and my PT guy was awesome helping me though each stage of my weight loss and needs. I have now lost 250 pounds and I still work out only in a pool because of my other medical issues. Go find a GOOD PT that is right for you and only do as much as your body will let you. DO not worry about no doing enough. Even if you get in a pool and stretch every day for 20 min.. Then pick it up as your body and PT person guides you to do. NEVER over do it. DO what feels right for your body and medical issues. Just one day at a time and you will be just fine sweetly. Best wishes hunn

First of all, doing 3 days a week of water aerobics  is great. You can do an easy weight routine with
soup cans until you work your way up to 2 or 3 pound dumbells. You can do bicep curls, tricep kickbacks, and shoulder presses with the soup cans. Start with 10 reps and work your way up to 3 sets of 10 each. When that gets too easy, you can increase the weight. Put on some music you like and just dance around. I can be in a crappy mood and dancing energizes me. I do that alot when I'm cooking dinner. My daughter walked in one night and thought I'd lost my mind, but she jumped right in and we had a good laugh! The Leslie Sansone walking tapes are fun and simple . You just need a space in front of your TV. Just start out and do as much as you can. I think the key to exercise is to start where you are . If it's 2 minutes, that's fine. With walking, add distance first. As time goes on, you can increase speed, and add some hills eventually. I hope this helps ! Good luck to you and let us know how things are going.

not sure if you have on demand but walk away the pounds i find to be easy, it's like a walk in place type you go at your own pace, i stop when i need to cuz i know in the future i will be able to do more later,

Good luck, does your dr require u to meet with an exercise specialist?  My surgeon does so hopefully i will get some good advice.

Good luck

well my highest weight was 344 BUT I understand where you are coming from I promise!  I could barely move.  I was super panicky about exercise too my Dr was a straight up JERK too telling me it didnt matter if I didnt eat that if I wasnt going to exercise I wouldnt lose weight.   She told me though to not stress about it but to MOVE for 10 minutes at a time 3 times a day and you know what??? that worked!!!   So if you are sitting at your computer put on some great music and dance in your seat...the music has to make you feel good right so DANCE!  :) It's been 3 months for me this week and Im still doing 30+ minutes a day some days 10 minues at a time and some days I will do it all at once but at first it was much harder.... it only takes a few weeks before it begins to be easier (((hug)))  It's going to be ok :D

I really got a lot from this post.  I started out at 314 lbs.  today I am about 260 lbs. depending on which day I get on the scale.  I am so no wanting to exercise.  I feel like I don't have much stamina.  In the beginning I could ride my exercise bike for about 10 minutes, but because I don't do it daily I am only able to stay on less and less.  I find myself looking at the time the entire time.  So, I bought a couple exercise dvds, but I haven't even taken the plastic off of them and opened them yet.  I did turn on the cable and started a workout the other day, but I just couldn't get far at all (not past the warm ups) I noticed I am getting sagging skin on my arms and would love to start working the weights on my arms.  This post let me know that I have to  start some where.  Thanks for all your suggestions...tomorrow will be a new day and I will try again.

Avoid any exercises that will stress your joints anymore. Water aerobics are probably the best, you might want to try some types of band training. Walking would be ok, if you don't have knee issues.

There is a program in some gyms called "silver sneakers" they are geared towards older people. BUT they have a group of exercises like "chair yoga" and "chair aerobics" that would be PERFECT for you.

Good luck.
