Any input on how to upload an avatar? I keep trying but...

I keep trying to find pictures where they are small and just me but everything is saying the file is too big.  Anyone else have this problem or have the time to give me some pointers on what I should do, I feel like having my face out there would be a good thing.  I just have been getting frustrated since I have been on OH but thought maybe I had a few moments to try again tonight.  Any help appreciated.
