Pre-op liquid diet weight loss?
Many doctors require all WLS patients to do that. They say it shrinks the liver, making access to the stomach easier.
I did it two weeks before my Sept. 29, 09 surgery. It wasn't that hard. I was psyched for the surgery, plus it didn't leave me hungry much. I lost 16 pounds in the two weeks. My husband starts his tomorrow for his Dec. 16 RNY.

I'm down 120 pounds - thanks to RNY! Working on the next 25. Then I'll tackle more...

You will probably be surprised how you aren't that hungry while doing it. At least, I wasn't! Try to keep busy and that will distract you and the time will go quickly.

I don't know if my surgeon will have me have a liquid diet before surgery, but they do require a VERY low carb diet for 4-6 weeks prior to surgery to shrink the liver (like 15g or less!). We have also been encouraged to begin drinking protein shakes to get used to them and find out which ones we like (no two people like the same ones it seems). In transitioning to the EXTREME low carb diet, I have been having a protein shake for breakfast every morning. Now I am starting to have one for breakfast and sometimes for lunch (along with other low-carb foods). It may help doing it in stages than all of a sudden. Just a suggestion. www.vitalady.com is a great website for purchasing samples of a tons of varieties to find what you like.

Hi Osage,
I've heard alot of post-ops enjoy Isopure. It's sold at GNC as well as several online vitamin shops. I actually use it too... I use the Vanilla ZERO-carb protein powder. Two scoops has 50g protein!! AND it's really yummy. I mix it with ice water and sip through a straw in the evenings as my "after dinner snack".
Others have said they have mixed it with milk, or milk/yogurt in a blender for a smoothie.

That's what my concern was too - especially since most protein powders come in HUGE containers. I didn't want to spend the money on something I couldn't stand (of course, I hear that something that you liked pre-op you may HATE post-op, so who knows). I ordered one sample of everything (except maybe a couple that I knew from the start I probably wouldn't like a particular flavor). Then I saved the checklist that she sent with the package and have been writing comments next to them so I could remeber which one I really liked. So far I have really liked everything I have tried from Nectar. Everything from Allmax has been pretty bland. JMO.
At least it's only two weeks- I had to lose 40 lbs before I'd get the surgery and was on a protein/low carb diet for months!
