I guess,  I should be happy that I lost 31 pounds.  But, My doctor told me to lose 70 pounds.   I had 8 months.  I visit him tomorrow and I thought we would shedule surgery.    I start at 395 pounds am now down to 355 pound which is a total lost 44 pounds.  But the first  10 pounds  did not count.   Because , Of time I went to my Surgeon.  I weighted 385.    I hoping He will still do the surgery.  Or will schudule it the last time talked to him was two months ago and said we would talk about it.  Once, I lost the 70 pounds.  But talked about doing before the endt of the year.  Since It only a month and half til the end of the year.   I so afraid.  He will not do it.  Because i have not lost enough weight.

I never even thought I would lose this much.  I,m so sick of waiting and not knowing.  Are other doctor this mean to their patients.   I am so scared to see him tomorrow.  I feel like a big failure.

Every doctor is different. I only had to lose 12 pounds. I've heard of others who have to lose 100.

See what he says at your appointment.

Can you change surgeons if it doesn't work out tomorrow?

I'm with the other poster - get a 2nd opinion from another doc.  I had surgery - started at 426 when I met with him he asked me to lose 15-20 lbs by the time of surgery - I lost 5...and still got my surgery.  It was open but still...I still got it.  The reason you're getting surgery is because you trouble losing weight so it's pretty silly to have a surgeon want you to lose so much before getting surgery.  I'd get a 2nd opinion if you can.

Most of the time Doctors aren't being mean to you when they want you to lose a significant amount of weight. They want to see if you are really dedicated enough to make a big effort to lose the weight. Are you going to be good at sticking to the program or are you going to expect the weight to just come off because you had the surgery? Or you could have some medical problem that requires you to lose some weight to make the surgery safer for you and easier for him to perform.

Go to the appointment and see what he has to say.

You made a signifigant effort...you lost weight!  I hope that is enough for them.  I was told to get my BMI to 60.  I lost over 80 lbs & had lost more before their program but of course they didn't count that either.  I was scheduled though not quiiiite at 60 BMI,  and had a safe surgery.  The weight loss is also to shrink your liver and make it easier to get tools in.  I really hope they scedule you...I have a good feeling about it.  Try not to freak out, if they postpone, they postpone, but it WILL HAPPEN.

Keep doing what you're doing...you lost weight!!! Congratulations  :)

Start: 487 lbs (8/07) Lost 81 lbs pre op on South Beach. 406 lbs at surgery (6/08). 179 post op, by 2011. I  lost 308 lbs. Gained 98 while pregnant (2012-13) lost all but 25. My goal is to be 179 again!

The doctors do not make us loose weight to be mean to us.  In talking to my Dr.  it was more about putting me at a reasonable risk level for the surgery and to ensure the best possible outcome.  My Dr. wanted me to loose an additional 50 and I had already lost 40 and was struggling.  I went over what I was doing and he suggested some further steps I could take.  I saw him again when I had lost 35 more pounds and he was willing to schedule the surgery at that point.
Looking back now some day's I think I should have lost more before the surgery to get the maximum benefit for the long term.

I suggest discussing what you are doing, pain levels, how much you are exercising and what you are eating with your Dr.  and go from there.  A second opinion is also an option but keep in mind your current Dr. is looking out for your interests as well.  I would be more concerned with a Dr. that is ready to cut if this one has reservations.  I fully understand and appreciate you desire to hurry the surgery along, just keep the big picture in mind.

My thoughts and prayers are with you!

I'm sorry, I think this is asinine. I may get flamed for this, but he must not be very confident in his abilities as a surgeon to make you lose that much weight. I really, really wish you the best, and hope he will schedule you, if not, I would find a different surgeon, not all surgeons make you jump through hoops, the whole "seeing if you are dedicated" thing is crap. If it was about dedication, we would all be skinny adn wouldn't need surgery. Please let us know how it goes.

I'm with Emilie.  There are good surgeons who prefer patients to lose weight pre-op, but 70 pounds is a huge and IMO unreasonable amount, unless you have some sort of physical issue that needs to be resolved before surgery.  My surgeon doesn't even require a pre-op diet and his mortality rate is nil and morbidity rate is very low.  Think about seeing another surgeon, please.  You are not married to this guy or anything.
