Panni Area
Hi, My name is Sara and I am new to the site but not to WLS. I have been thinking of it for years and have finally got up to freaking sense to do something about it. I am waiting on approval currently.
My question is...what is a panni? I have seen people talk about it and I feel pretty stupid asking but I'd like to know.
I am 410 lbs with a BMI of 60.....wow that sounds bad....well, it is bad....that is why I am here. I am so tired of my weight controlling my life and I am determined to change it. Please feel free to "friend me" as I don't know anyone on here or anyone else that has gone through what I'm about to experience. Thanks for reading my post!

A "panni" is short for a panniculectomy, or the removal of excess skin and fat from the abdomen after massive weight loss, usually. A "pannus" is the apron of skin that hangs over the legs in many obese individuals.
A panniculectomy differs from an abdominoplasty, or "tummy tuck," in that the abdominal muscles are not sutured closer together during the procedure.

Hi Sara
Welcome to BMI over 50... you will love it here.. everyone is so helpful and supportive..
Do not ever think a question is stupid or makes you look stupid.. No one will ever think that.. None of us knew any of the terms when we started out either.. asking is how we all learned.. So dont be afraid to ask anything.. we will help anytime..
I have a pretty big belly that really hangs down.. It hangs down onto the front of my thighs.. When I loose all the weight I am going to loose ..say in two years or so.. I am going to have surgery to have that removed because nothing will make it go away.. It will be a big empty sac of skin hanging down.. no exercise or dieting will take it away.. So I might choose to have a Panni to have it removed.. In the panni they just remove the excess skin and thats it.. Now if I can get the insurance to pay I might do more than a panni.. I might do an abdominalplasty..I know I spelled that wrong..lol... any way in that the surgeons not only remove excess skin but the cut and tighten up the muscles walls in the belly and around to the sides.. a much better proceedure but more expensive.. a lot just do the panni.. usually most insurances will not pay for either so you are looking at out of pocket expenses... so more panni's are done.. some insurances are starting to pay now but they are few and far between..
hope that helps you understand.
