Bouncing Back...
Hi Everyone! My failed RNY attempt is now a week behind me and I've spent the week mourning the loss and regrouping. I am NOT giving up!
I meet with my surgeon on Thursday so we'll see what he has to say and I've also put calls into the local army hospital (my husband is retired military).
I am hoping to get the sleeve which may actually be a better choice for me than RNY! Things do happen for a reason! My insurance does not yet cover it, but perhaps we can make a case for it (I don't want LapBand b/c, seriously, I'm allergic to everything!). If not, then the military hospital does them and TriCare has no problem with that.
My incisions are healing, though I've had a horrible allergic reaction to the surgical glue. Guess we know not to use that again!
I'll keep you updated!

Laura, I am so happy to hear this! The VSG sounds like it would be great for you! I was so sorry to read about your surgery last week.
The path to WLS seems to never be without alot of bumps along the way. I had hemmed and hawed about having WLS for years, but just kept gaining weight and getting more miserable and less mobile. I finally made the decision to do it and started the whole process. I was about 7 months into the process, had insurance approval, had done the preop dieting, food logs, and exercise logs, and was just waiting for a surgery date. The day before my appt. to go over all my tests and logs, the WLS center abruptly closed down!! I was so upset!!! I also spent a couple of weeks regrouping, and started researching surgeons again. It was a blessing in disguise, because I found a great surgeon! I know he also does VSG if you are interested. ( I don't know if he takes Tricare, but you could call and find out).
I know that lots and lots of people on the WA board have had good experiences at Madigan. So happy to hear you are feeling better. Good luck to you!!! Keep in touch!

VSG sounds like a great solution for you!!
However, I'm not sure what happened to you should be called a "failed RNY." You didn't get the roux en Y procedure completed, but it's not any failure of yours or the doctors'. When I think of "failed RNY," I'm more apt to think of someone with a surgical problem: their pouch started leaking, or their blind stomach reattached (happened more often before surgeons were just stapling stomachs -- now they separate the blind stomach from the pouch). Your case really isn't a failure -- it just didn't happen.
Then there's also the failure if someone had surgery, lost a bunch and then gained it back because they couldn't deal with the lifestyle changes that are necessary to make this work.
I'm scratching my head trying to think of another term. Incomplete?
Wishing you lots of luck on your journey!!!

One food makes you larger, and one food makes you small...
Laura, I agree with Patti. I wouldn't put "failed RNY" on your sig line. I think it has the connotation that you had an RNY and ended up regaining weight and "failed" it. Maybe put "unsuccessfull attempt of RNY"?
Anyway, glad to hear you are bouncing back. I just got my VSG Oct 20th so I am biased, but I had a BMI going in of 63.7 and had no complications with the surgery. Everyone who saw my surgery performed said it went very well. In the first week I have lost 22 pounds! I would have gotten RNY if they could have figured it out with the hernia but I ended up with VSG and I think I am better off for it. It can also be converted to a DS down the line if you find you need the malabsorption but I have talked to many people with VSG who lost plenty of weight and did not need to convert to DS. All the tools work if you work them, I think.
Hopefully, you will get your new surgery date and be on your way and when you look back in the years to come this will seem like a small bump on your journey. I will think happy thoughts for you. : )

Woo Hoo, I knew you would bounce back, Laura. Anybody with a fear of needles who gets an arterial blood gas is one TOUGH strong cookie!! Your plan sounds great. Good luck with your appointment Thurs.
Sorry about the allergic reaction. Bummer. My daughter from India is allergic to many many things too. It's a hassle, but she's learned to cope like you have.
Let us know what the surgeon says.
