My starting out BMI was 60. I started out wanting a lap band, then wanted a sleeve, then I ended up getting an RNY because that's what my insurance would pay for.

Lap band will help you lose weight, but you might not get where you want to be.

Even with RNY my doc's goal weight for me is 208 (BMI 32.6). That's when he'll consider me a success.

Do some more research here on OH -- look at all the different surgeries before you make a decision.

Best of luck!!

From everything I have read, the Lap Band seems to be the worst possible choice for someone who has hundreds to lose. The stats aren't there and the risk of complications in future years is high.

The RNY, DS, and VSG are all better choices. Which one would work best for you is really a personal decision. I would suggest you read the pros and cons of each surgery and then decide what sort of lifestyle you plan to live. The DS has excessive malabsorption and requires a lifetime vitamin regimine. This results in almost guaranteed weight loss, but obviously the risk of side effects is also highest. RNY also has malabsorption but is done in a different way.

One of the main reasons I personally chose the VSG is that I didn't want that lifestyle. I wanted something that would force me to eat less and help me lose weight, but I wanted it to be low maintenance. I don't want to be worried that I'll be in the hospital if I accidentally forget a few vitamins (they are recommended but it is much less dangerous if you miss them compared to DS). My problem has always been volume eating, pigging out at buffets. So the sleeve has been great for preventing that. I also like that I can tolerate any food I choose to eat. But some people think they need the "dumping" from other WLS, that's a personal decision for you.

I started at 475 and was at 393 day of surgery and went with the RNY procedure which my Dr. agreed with for my case.  Upside it went through insurance without issue.  Good luck,

RNY on 01/30/08 with
I had discussed the lapband with my doctor and we both came to the agreement that the RNY would be best for me since I was starting out at a weight of 501.  To date, I have lost 300 pounds and it was the best decision I have ever made.  Good luck!

You are an inspiration..keep up the great work!

14 pounds lost before surgery. My first ticker is when I hit onderland: this was my goal when I started on this journey.  I want to focus on that right now...once I get there I can reevaluate.

My second ticker is my dream goal. Even if I only visit there for a short time, it would be nice to see that number just once.  I am pretty sure I'll need plastics to hit this goal.

Unless there is some medical reason the person can't have another surgery, the lap band is not an appropriate surgery for a SMO person. Stastics show that it takes up to 3 years to lose all the weight you're gonna lose, and most people (statistically lose only 50 percent of their excess weight).

The DS would probably be the best surgery for someone with a BMI over 50, followed by....well I wouldn't recommend any of the others...but hell I'm not a glutton for punishment, I suffered with obesity, why would i want to suffer with dumping or regain.

When I was looking at the lapband I was told that when they do the fill under a kind of xray (i forget what it is called) that there was a weight capacity -- so that's what had me looking at the sleeve...

I had RNY. I started at 597, was 540 the day of surgery. I think there is so much weight to lose that the lapband would not be drastic enough, but again, it is a matter of personal opinion. Have you spoken with your surgeon and/or dr to get input on what would be best for you?

I was ALMOST 500 lbs.  I had to losealot 1st just to do a RNY.  It worked though.  I haven't heard good things about high BMI and the lap band.  I would do alot of research and then decide.  Good luck on your journey  :)

Start: 487 lbs (8/07) Lost 81 lbs pre op on South Beach. 406 lbs at surgery (6/08). 179 post op, by 2011. I  lost 308 lbs. Gained 98 while pregnant (2012-13) lost all but 25. My goal is to be 179 again!
