Calcium and multivit question

How much calcium do you all take a day?  My surgeon wants me to take 2 calcium citrate +D four times a day.  That's eight chewables a day.  Can we switch to the pill form down the line, because just looking at those chewables now makes me want to puke.

How many multivitamin's do you take a day too?  I'm taking Centrum Silver chewables. I was taking 4 a day but cut it down to 2 a day.  Another nasty chewable!

Thanks!
Linda

Hi Linda  ~

I have had success taking 2500 mg of calcium citrate chewables a day.  Yep, they're pretty vile, haha.  YUK!    Have you tried Bariatric Advantage Cinnamon?  They are less gross than the ones I got locally.  (to me)

I take 4 multis a day.  I use "One Source Complete w/ iron"  From Wal Mart.

I take them at different times of the day, calcium can make iron hard to absorb...or vice versa.

Yuk, but if it keeps me healthy...it's worth it.

Hi Stella,

Thanks for the reply.  Are the Bariatric Advantage Cinnamon a chewable? I will have to look them up.

I set a timer for every two hours to take some kind of vitamins.  I am so sick of the chewables. They just nauseate me now.  I haven't found a protein I like either.  It's like everything I put in my mouth since surgery is nasty.   I can't wait until the pureed stage.  My doc makes us wait till week five though to start that.  I don't know why so darn long.

I was just looking at your profile.  You've done so great with your weight loss!!  I loved your pictures too.  Are you into photography?  I am...love it.

I see your a vegetarian.  I kinda am, though I eat some chicken occasionally.  Maybe you could give me some of your vege recipes.

Thanks again,
Linda

Oh I can't tell you how much I detest the vitamin regimine.  I started off taking one bariatricadvantage calcium chewable 3 times a day...had my one month check-up and my calcium level was too high, so she lowered it to 2 a day.  I eat alot of yogurt and cheese, and the doc says thats the reason it was high.  Sooooo...I eat a little more yogurt and cheese, and I lowered it to one a day.  I go for my 3 month check up in 2 weeks, so I'll see then if everything is okay.  I take 2 multi's a day, one B12 and one B50.  There are days that I only get them in once...but so far so good.  I'll know more in a couple of weeks, after the blood tests.
I asked her at one month if I could start taking regular pills, you know, not chewables, and she said "not yet".  Hopefully that will change next time. I hate the chewables!!!  Choking down the protein crap is hard enough...I'm ready to give up the chewables...lol

I know. I just HATE the chewables. So chalky and leave your tongue coated. They are just nasty.

What kind of protein do you use?  I haven't found one that I don't gag down yet.  Is it the whey that is the nasty taste and smell?

Thanks,
Linda

I've tried Chike, Nectar, Pure..and a few others...Chike was the most drinkable, however...I just cant do it.  So I drink the protein shots.  I've heard they arent the best for us, but some protein is better than none.  I really try and eat alot of protein.  Makes for a boring diet..but I'll take it over the protein powder anyday. You'd think that in this day and age they could come up with a drinkable whey protein.
Good luck with everything. I"ll post how my labs are in two weeks.  I'm hoping that I'm doing okay

Thanks Linda...been a long road.  I still have farther to go too.

The reason I like the Bari Adv cinnamon is that they aren't "tart".   I suck on them, like a hard candy.  Works for me.  I HATE the cherry version now.  I used  to love their sweet tart taste but it's overwhelming to me now.  Yep...all the Bari Adv "lozenges" are chewable.  They're pretty spendy, but if I can get them down it's cool.  I don't like them chewed though, they're huge and get bigger as you chew!   Not so bad when you just let them dissolve slow, I keep them in my purse.

I've been veg since childhood so it's just second nature for me.  Protein has not been a problem.  I use CHIKE and Unjury shakes.   I like them all (I am real sick of banana CHIKE though...it's a bit much) I usually make a chocolate shake with added SF choco syrup from WalMart, made with ice and skim milk.  Not too shabby.  Unjury chocolate is prolly my fave one.  No yucky aftertaste.  Awesome.

One good way to look at getting all this crap in is to tell yourself it's MEDICINE...not food.  So even if you are not in the mood for it you make yourself do it anyway.  I just try not to think about it, get it in, swallow it down.  So worth it!   I stopped for a while and I felt AWFUL.  The supplements really make a huge difference  :)

Every time I post about my vitamins/calcium, somebody throws a brick at me. I'm only 6 months out, so don't consider me an expert, but this is what I take:

Morning: 1 Citrical Max (315 mg elemental calcium), 1 Nature's Science calcium citrate (113 mg elemental calcium I thin****ep taking it for the magnesium that's in it)

Four hours later (2 hours away from my iron/multivitamin):   1 Citrical Max, 1 Nature's Science calcium citrate

Sometime in the afternoon: two bariatric advantage calcium chewies (250 mg elemental calcium each)

Right before bed: 1 Citrical Max (315 mg), 1 Nature's Science calcium citrate

The Citrical max are pretty big, but I've had no issues getting them down.

So, I roughly get 1800 mg on a workday. Sometimes, less on the weekends because I keep the chewies at work (I try to take an extra Citrical on Sat and Sun).

My doc didn't allow us to swallow pills the first 6 weeks, so I'd empty the Nature's science calcium capsules into my mouth and wa**** down with some water. I wasn't getting enough calcium early out. (My nut recommended just three Nature's Science each day -- way too little elemental calcium.)

I take two Centrum Adult chewables daily, along with 2 chewable iron (Bariatric Advantage) and 2 sugar free Vitamin C chewables.

Good luck.

Hi Donna,

Do you know if these are much smaller in size? I have the maximum ones.  Actually though, today I cut them in half and they went down okay.  I just did not want to take another chewable.

Thanks,
Linda
