Atkins diet 2 weeks preop vs liquid diet

My surgeon's nutritionist put me on the Atkin's diet for 2 weeks prior to surgery and then I'm to do a liquid diet for 2 weeks after, then phase 2 of pureed food and then soft foods....I'm seeing and talking with people who were on a liquid diet for like 6 weeks which started like a week or two before their surgery. Why is it that people are put on different diets? The people who are smaller than me are put on liquid and I'm really obese and they have me on their generic Atkins diet. I'm not understanding this at all.

i checked out a wt loss surgery book from the library and that physican group had people on liquids for SIX weeks pre op. Doctors don't really know much about nutrition, but they know what they believe to be good preparation for them to operate. You just have trust them and do what your group wants (or tell them why you want to do something different). The main thing is that you are on the same page as your own surgeon. We need very low calories and lots of protein prior surgery so the liver will shink and not be in the way and so our bodies are strong for the surgery.

Seriously, if you ever want to know about nutrition, you talk to the dietitian NOT the doctor.
Food is for sissies. REAL women exist on skim milk, protein powder, broth and air.....

Thank you for the info. I'm sure you had to have lost a lot on the liquid diet though. I'm definitely going to do with the nutritionist says I was just questioning why some practices have a set protocol for all patients instead of individualizing the diet plan.

Every Dr is different, we see proof of that dozens of times a day right here in the posts. Just do what your Dr. says and you'll be fine.

All WLS Docs are different, with each one thinking thier program works best.  It's just the way of the world.  One thing that is consistant with all of them tho, is the fact that they want you to lose as much weight as possible right before the surgery to reduce the size of your liver.  Fat people have fat livers and it makes it hard to get around in there laproscopically.  Your liver is the first thing that loses fat.
My doc didnt have me do a liquid diet, just a really low calorie one with lots of protein and no carbs...so I guess it was the Atkins diet as well.  But after the surgery, it was 1 week of liquid and then on to puree for 1 week and then on to soft foods for 2 weeks, and then on to normal food, but there was a list of foods I could and couldnt have.  It's not until 6 months out that I can eat whatever I can tolerate.  I'm 2 months out now...and everything seems to be working fine.
Good luck

My doctor doesn't have a specific pre-op diet, he just tells you to lose weight in some way. I personally chose to do Atkins for the 3 weeks prior to surgery and I lost 12 pounds in those weeks.

Honestly if I were you, I would just be happy that I didn't have to do a liquid only. I would've died if I had to do that pre-op!

I see that you are from Greenville therefore surgeon proly came from southern surgical. I asked the same question Friday and my surgeon Dr. Naziri told me that every doctor is different. In his practice they have seen that the atkins diet works therefore they use it. I just started my atkins diet today and I understand why you would question too.
