Chair Yoga

I was just reading the messages from the folks who are quitting smoking in addition to weight loss. I'm THINKING about you, guys. Hang in there. So I thought I would post about my experience with chair yoga.

Our Parks and Rec offers this class once a week and I love it. For one thing, everyone else is at least 80 and I'm 57 so I feel YOUNG, but I am the fattest. (I'm used to that) Most the the class is done in the chair and emphasis is on breathing and moving each joint gently. The instructor talks about honoring our bodies and our inner energy. It's so soothing. I'm not burning many calories but it does a world of good for my mental health.

We stand up a little and do some balancing exercises; just gentle stuff. Anyway, if you can get into one of these classes, I highly recommend it. I've ordered a CD from Amazon and will let you know if it is any good.

I think a lot of us have a lot of negative energy. We have endured the disapproval of those around us and WORSE, our own self loathing. We need a lot or rearranging of our thoughts so that we can take the time and effort to fight this weight battle. If we don't think we are worth it, we won't continue to make the effort.

I'm a church lady and have read the Bible quite a bit and spent MANY hours in Bible study, but the yoga has actually helped me accept myself and be gentle with myself. Maybe I was just ready for this. Anything that helps us feel energetic and calm and peaceful is a GOOD thing.

Good post!

I used to do a Tai Chi tape, but stopped when the tape broke (probably from the wear and tear of me stopping it to rest a bit after exercises).

It make me feel good and helped my movement. Amazon.com, here I come!

Hey RubyEllen, what is the name of the CD you are ordering from Amazon?  Is it a chair yoga CD?  I wish we had something like that around here for my poor arthritic knees.  They have programs at the senior center in my town but they won't let me do them because they say it is for 65+.  My tax dollars at work!  Years ago I did a tape called "sit and be fit" that was a program from an old exercise show from PBS, but I have a DVD player now not a VCR.

Great tip, let us know about the video you ordered.
I feel that we need to approach this from a mind/body continuum so your Yoga would be a great addition.  Have been wanting to try yoga but due to my size did not think I could do it yet.
Thanks for sharing and keep up the great work!

I ordered Chair Yoga, a Seated Practice as it was the newest one, but you can search for Chair Yoga DVD or Chair exercise DVD and get several choices and there are reviews. I am a sucker for Amazon as you get free shipping if you spend more than $25. I'll post here how I like it.

I am surprised at how much I enjoy the relaxation of the yoga breathing. I go in my bedroom and do a little relaxation and it keeps me out of trouble with food (some of the time.....)

Bummer on the Sr Center making you be over 65. Seems like if you have a medical need, a person should be able to benefit from it.

My knees area bad too and there is a machine called seated NuStep that was used in a Univ of MO study of arthritic knees. It seems to help them. I am also able to use a recumbent bike. I am not currently doing those things, but hope to start up again soon. I've been trying to figure out my shoulder problems and now that I know it can't be fixed, I'll move on to other stuff. I have to figure out something aerobic to do, although I'm so fat that getting out of bed and grocery shopping is fairly aerobic for me!!

I have to figure out something aerobic to do, although I'm so fat that getting out of bed and grocery shopping is fairly aerobic for me!!    LMAO cause I can so totally relate.  Since you mentioned it, when I go to stores I kind of use a cart like a walker.  And sometimes I go to Home Depot which is a mile from my house and walk the back perimeter and up and down the back aisles.  The store is such a huge warehouse you rarely ever even run into a person who works there and mostly they ignore you, occasionally they may ask if you need help and I just say no thanks and keep moving on.  And the good thing is you are not tempted to spend money in the least as it is all hardware and lumber.  Way to tempting to walk around Wal-Mart!

I'm one of the odd girls who would rather spend $ at Home Depot. Too many potential projects!

Donna, walking in Home Depot is brilliant. Yes, stuff at WM just jumps in my cart (which I am totally using as a walker). I actually do NOT get in trouble at Kohls for some reason, so I have been known to walk around in there for exercise, but I probably need a few more options so the staff doesn't think I'm a homeless lady. I have a Home Depot and a Lowe's nearby. I should scope them out.

6 more lbs until I reach my 10%!!
