Hello i have had no luck finding a big scale..so i am
hearing some of you say to measure yourself..
ok i dont have a tape measure long enough to wrap around my gut...
plus how do i measure my chest.?? with no bra [and droopy?] or bra and under the breast or what..?
never measured before i ran and hid when my friends did it.
so now i need to learn HELP???

How much better is it to measure instead of weighing in and
why is it different?
thanks all for putting up with silly questions

Joann's or Michael's has a tape measure for quilters that is 60 inches long. If you are larger than 60 inches around, I recommend getting 2 and taping them together. I always measure my bust with my bra on, measuring at the fullest part of the breast, which is usually at about the nipple line or midpoint.

Frankly, both weighing and measuring have their good points! But with measuring, you don't get the same harsh self-judgment I see people do to themselves with the numbers on the scale. Because most fat people have horrible experiences with weighing in (yours' truly right here!), reliving that as you weigh yourself week after week can produce a huge load of anxiety and shame! Especially in those dreaded months when we hit a plateau in our weight loss!

With measuring, though results take longer, you can look back and say,"Wow. I went from a 48 inch waist to a 29 inch waist." It's a real world number and helps people stay motivated. Plus, if you're still losing inches while the number on the scale stays the same, you know that your exercising is turning fat into muscle.

I've been running for 3 months and though I have only lost 2 pounds, I lost an entire inch off my weight. Boo-YAH!! So, for me, I try to go with the best of both worlds. I weigh myself once every week or two, and lately I've been measuring as well.

As humiliating as it may be, when I need to weigh myself and have no scales that can read my weight I go to the major airport near me and as one of the airline freight offices if I can use thier frieght scale.

If you want to get a scale I have this one.  It is accurate up to 550.  It works fine.  I have had it for a couple years now.

Usually a hospital has a scale i was told at one of them it weighed up to 1,000 lbs. Call any hospitals near you and ask, they usually are very helpful.

I think you are better off without a scale in the beginning.  I didn't buy one until I was three months out.  Something to think about.  Loris

Hi Chatty!

You can find an extra-long tape measure--I bought one the week before my March surgery at a fabric store chain, and it goes up to 148", I believe. I use it monthly and also have my bf take pics of me the first of each month so I'll have them for comparison along the journey. As far as the scale, I have one that goes up to 400 lbs but weighs heavier than the professional one at the bariatric center, so I didn't use it til recently. I relied on the weigh-ins as the surgeon's office for the good news (always happily surprised!) and I feel better for not being an obsessive scale-stepper-onner as I've been on my past dieting attempts (led to unrealistic expectations and inevitable disappointments, weighing so very often!). I now will weigh once monthly as my bariatric center appts. are three months in-between. Hope you find a weighing/measuring routine that works for you!~

Hi Chatty,

I just ordered a scale at amazon but there are scales all over the net. I chose a high capacity digital. While checking out I ran across this measuring tape that was fairly inexpensive and measures to 80 inches.  About $9 with shipping but you may be able to find it for a cheaper shipping amount.

Get a ball of yarn and wrap it around the area you are measuring and then cut, where the string starts to overlap.

Use this string to measure against a tape measure.
