Hi! I'm New Too!
Hi! I'm Laura. I'm 39 and mom to two great kids (7 & 5). I live in Seattle and I'm a teacher but I own a tutoring business now.
I'm just starting on this journey. I made the decision to have gastric bypass last week. I've been considering it for a while - but I committed to it last week. I've seen my primary physician already and have the referral. I finally found a doctor (a lot don't take our insurance - grr) and I have the informational meeting on the 25th. I have sleep apnea and am pre-diabetic so I think the insurance will easily approve. :) I'm hoping for an October date if things go smoothly. I'm planning on having a LapRNY.
I'm lucky in that my husband, mom and friends are really supportive.
I've been lurking here for the last week so I've read a lot. :)
I'm tall but my BMI is 55 - eek! I had no idea that it was anywhere near that until I checked last week - I almost fell out of my chair!
Well, I think that's about it - how boring - I feel like I should tell a joke or something but I only know jokes that 5 and 7 year olds think are funny. ;)

Hi Again!
Welcome to the board Laura. I also have sleep apnea and have been worried about my blood sugars creeping up although my doc said it wasnt considered prediabetes yet. I am also going to have a lap RNY. I will be having it 9/29. Been spending this last year losing weight to have the surgery since my BMI was alot higher than 55, but I am 5' 10" so it definitely helps. Got only 9 pounds left to lose of what my surgeon required me to lose. I went to my PCP last week and my blood sugar was 107! just by losing the first 50 preop and my cholesterol was 218! in the lower end of the borderline. Some day I hope to be free of that darn CPAP mask!
I am 45, live in the burbs of Boston and am a medical transcriptionist working from home. My "children" are my 2 dogs.

You guys are so lucky to be TALL! I am short (5"2") and not only did my 292 pounds absolutely WRECK my frame and cause constant pain, I learned that to get my BMI down to 25, I'd have to get down to 136 pounds at the most. LAME!
I now weigh 150, have been stretching and running for about 3 months now and only seen a small reduction on the scales. HOWEVER, a couple of my guy neighbors have made some comments, such as "Lookin' good!" and "Wow." So I think I'm going in the right direction, and it's a total motivation to keep up the good work.
I can feel my muscles, yo!
I also had a laparascopic RNY, and I feel good about my choice. I used to have hypertension and sleep apnea, and they have completely resolved as a result of the weight loss. Still, I regularly keep my diet journal, and make an effort to have one big salad, with radishes, bean pods, carrots, and grape tomatoes, per day. It's amazing how good you feel, when you live on better foods with less sugar and white flour!
Anyway, welcome to the board and I look forward to hearing more about your journey!

In Order To Change...a Caterpillar must have the faith of a Butterfly
Welcome, Laura. Good luck with getting all your appointments done. My appointments went great, but I still need to lose a little weight before surgery. My insurance requires a 10% loss. ALMOST there....
I have the sleep apnea mask too. I absolutely cannot sleep without it. I don't know if I will lose it, even if I lose a bunch of weight as my stupid TONGUE is extra big. (I sure felt like a freak the first time the ENT doc told me that!)
You will have more energy for those young kids of yours after you get the weight off. Best of luck. Good group here to "hang out" with.

Thanks so much for the welcomes!
Oh RubyEllen ~ I'm a freak too! LOL My doctor told me that I have a small mouth (my husband would beg to differ, he thought that was hilarious) and a large tongue! LOL I've gotten to the point where I can't sleep without my mask either - it's a love/hate relationship. :p It sounds like you are doing great - losing 10% - that is awesome!
Donna ~ Good for you! Congrats on having a date. I bet you are counting down the days at this point. :) Your children are very cute and furry! We are dog lovers here.

Hey RubyEllen,
I just had to add.... I dont have a big tongue but I was shocked to have my GI doc tell me at my first colonoscopy that I have an extremely large colon! LOL! Im thinking, hey there aint nothin skinny about me. I even have my dad's feet, have to wear a size 13 MENS! shoes. No high heels for me! Nobody ever quesses my feet are that big, I think I would look pretty weird and off balance with size 6 women's feet.
