My goal weight will still leave me overweight!
Being a little over a year out, I lost 186 pounds from June of last year and 165 pounds from my surgery date of 7/9/08. When I went for my one year followup, while I was elated at being down from 407 at my heaviest to 226 at one year, my surgeon told me he would consider me successful even though I didn't lose another pound. I want to lose at least 50 more pounds (I think I just am having my first stall because my weight hasn't changed since July 9th). I've stepped up my exercise so it is possible I'm gaining muscle but it is still frustrating.
I was 53 when I had my surgery and spent 49 years of my life battling my weight. I know it may take another year or two to take off this excess weight but as Mojave Patty said, take your goals a piece at a time. Make them attainable and enjoy the ride of the first year. It will be an interesting one also.
Your self esteem should never be tied to your weight, a number on a scale, your job, anything other than how you feel about you. I am finally starting to learn that. I got real tired of a # on a scale dictating how I feel about myself, the size of my clothes, etc. I am happy about what I've accomplished so far (5X Roamans to anywhere between an 18-22, some 0X's at Catherines (the only time in my adult life I wore a size 0 in anything). I can go into a store and purchase something I LIKE versus something that will cover my body. That in itself is fantastic.
All that aside, health is the most important thing. All of the other stuff is gravy and the ability to exercise, walk at the state fair or county fair or any event, to have fun with your daughter (they are little for such a short time), to enjoy LIFE. You are young and you have so much courage to take this on at your age.
September 1st will come fast. I have you in my thoughts.
Edited: Remembered your post for your date of 9/1. September 14th will come faster than you know it too.

have you researched the DS surgery? The RNY is the most common surgery, but it is NOT the one that gives people with a BMI over 50 the best chance to get to goal and stay there. The RNY has a failure rate of 35-50 % for those with a BMI over 50 which I find shockingly high (and the RNY surgeons seem to forget to mention that there is a surgery with a much better sucess rate while not having more complications). And even those who are sucessful with a RNY (means they manage to keep 50% of their excess weight off longterm) rarely ever get to their goal, not even speaking of a normal weight. And regain is frequent. PLease do yourself the favor and check the DS out before you are cut open!! You can learn everything on www.dsfacts.com and on the DS board of obesityhelp. If your insurence says they don`t pay for the DS, you can appeal and force them to pay. People do that every day and WIN. Again, you can get advice on the DS board,
All the best,
J.
My surgeon didn't even mention a goal weight at my consult--as I mentioned in an earlier post, that would have been asking me to walk to the moon.
I never thought I'd be at this point this time last year. I still have weight to lose and at my one year follow up, my surgeon said another 30-35 pounds he would consider me healthy although I would still be on the border of obese and overweight. I want another 30 pounds from that point but I know it will take longer than this weight took to come off. I know the exercise has to be stepped up consistently but I'm getting better. I just became eligible for a support group for 1 year and up and as they said--baby steps.
Over the last 6 weeks, I haven't lost more than about 3 pounds but I put on a pair of pants that I couldn't wear about then and a shirt I bought as Dress Barn and the shirt is huge. I don't get it but I'll take it.
You will find that this journey is like life--bumps along the way, twists and turns but it will be interesting. Enjoy the ride!!

I myself have a BMI greater then 55 and my dr suggested i talked to the surgeon (appt on 9/8/09) about maybe having the sleeve done and then about 6-18months later do the full on RNY, or else id still be considered obese after just RNY.
Im not sure what what the surgeon will say or think but glad my dr told metioned and def.. something i will consider. you can read a little more here :
