Next week my doctor is going to prescribe Topamax to help with my compulsive eating. It sounds like it has some nasty side affects. I am most worried about the fatigue and inability to concentrate. I already have that problem! Has anyone taken this and has it helped with your urge to eat? Thanks!

If you uncontrollable bleed, stinging pains through your legs and arms, full blown cramping, and  If inability to concentrate means forgetting how to talk and walk.  If that is your thing. Then take it.  But, understand the only way you actually lose weight on this medication is because you became so sick you cannot hold any food down.  The inside of my stomach  was so sore.  I could not eat.  I could not walk . I had on energy left to walk.  The weight lose is a side effect the mediction.  I thought, I was going to die from it.  It took about 4 weeks to get the medication out of my system.  Before I felt nomal again.

Please look up all the side effect and look up other people taken it before you to see if you still want to take it.

Their are life threating side effects.

Blood clots
hair loss
stomach pain
paranoia
backpain
stinging in the arms and legs.
loss of memory
loss of gait( your ability to walk)
inability to concentrate
eye pain
thoughts of death
uncontrllable bleeding or periods.

Hi Nicole.  Is Dr. Steele the one prescribing it?  Just curious.

My mom took it for migraines.  She had a little bit of brain fog with it ****asionally forgetting a word or something) but nothing to the point that it made her stop taking it.  She did have significant appetite reduction while on it and lost some weight.  She also noticed that her money spending was significantly curbed.  Basically, it has an effect of reducing impulsive behaviors.

I took it for a while until my insurance decided it wasn't on their basic drug list. My doc and I didn't think that the benefits were worth writing a letter asking for an exception. I did have decreased appetite due to a bit of nausea at first, but that wore off as I got accustomed to the med.

Hello Nicole,

I took topomax every night because it made me so darn tired.. I do think it had some effect on eating because it is a medication for depression and can also be used to Bipolar disorder along with other meds.. I got used to the medication and it was no longer working for the over eating and that was when the side effects started to show up. I started noticing the drain ion the shower was always **** of hair..MINE.. Every morning when I got up out of bed and stood up I was dizzy and very nausious. I was beggining to loose things like the car keys and such because I just could not concentrate on what I did with them.. The last straw was when I let my dog out in the fenced yard on a hot summer day and forgot all about her. It was about 6 hours later that I realized she had not been around. I searched the whole house for her over and over. Finally I opened the door and there she stood panting so much and was so bad I was afraid I had killed her.....She could have died.. I called my doctor right away and he got me off of them. I do not think the good outweighs the bad with this medication.
Good Luck to you.. I would discuss it more with your doctor, There are many other drugs that help suppress your appitite that do not have the side effects of this one.
God Bless
Teresa S

My pdoc wanted me to take it for bipolar.  I told him no.  I'm glad I did.  I take other stuff for that now.
