For us wls'ers the word independence means so much more then it did pre-op... just think about all of the things we can do since losing weight an so much more we will be able to enjoy in the future... im SO Thankful for my RNY, Dr.Strodel for perfoming it... for the ability to have portion control wired in... to be able to walk without feeling like im going to die.... to be able to ride a bike again after 20yrs.. to have hope of a future without all the struggles of obesity... to no longer need diabetes meds... the possibliity to have a baby in the near future... I hope all of u count ur blessings of wls and remind urself how lucky we all are on days the scale doesnt agree with us.. I just wanted to share a few of my new found independence's with u all... hope u have a Safe Happy 4th!!

This is a long post.

I normally look on the boards and don't post often but you hit it right on the head--

All of us who are either looking into the journey of WLS or are post op and continuing, our goal was to declare our independence of FAT--the fat that held us all back for doing things we love, having the ability to do things with our families that we can now do because we have gone thru this journey.  I would like to pose a question to all-how has WLS helped you to gain independence from our excess weight.

My surgiversary is July 9th (next Thursday).  I started my WLS journey by making an appointment with Dr. Manfred Chaing at Bariatric Institute of Wisconsin and went into his office on January 31st.  The journey actually started that day--when I went thru all of the tests and found that I had more co-morbidities than I thought (asthma, edema so bad that I could sit and watch my ankles swell, sleep apnea in the severe category, high chlesterol, bad chlestrol, back pain, knee pain, degenerative disc disease (which I already knew about), shortness of breath and I can go on and on.  On June 3, 2008, my insurance company, United Health Care, called me personally to let me know I was approved.  My surgeon's office was calling at the same time I was on the phone with them.

I went into the Nutritionist's office weighing 407 on June 18, 2008 (I weighed 386 on 1/31).  On 7/9, I weighed 386 and surgery proceeded.  I was fortunate not to have a hard weight loss requirement because Dr. Chaing had the foresight to know that no matter what I did, I would not lose weight and things would get far worse if I didn't have the surgery.

It is now July 3rd (6 days away from my officlal surgiversary).  I can fit behind the wheel of my car, I looked better in a mother of the bride dress on 1/3/09 when my daughter got married (I wi**** were lower but when she said she was proud of me that made so many things worth it), I am leaning to stand up for myself when people at work try to use me as a doormat, I was able to give back my CPAP almost 2 months ago, my blood pressure is normal, my chlesterol at 6 months was normal and should be better at 1 year, my back and knees don't hurt as much, I went from a Roamans 5X (38-40) to a 22-24 (that nasty flap of skin), I can get closer to my husband when I hug him (he's even lost 25 pounds he needed to lose in the bargain).

I feel that by having WLS, I have gained independence and am beginning to live like a "normal" person.  Our tool is so valuable that there isn't a price that can be put on it.

Best to all.

Happy 4th to you, first of all! And GREAT POST! Both of your reflections are right on as to the true meaning of independence, WLS-personalized. Even though my journey has only begun (RNY on 3/31/09), I'm already experiencing increased independence with less effort in many areas (ie shaving my legs doesn't leave me breathless, my car seat belt isn't restricting me tightly, etc. etc.)...I can only read and visualize what I'll feel like a year out! Thanks for sharing, and enjoy this weekend!

PS: My bf is down 40 lbs. since my 3/31 surgery...a healthy side effect of sharing a high protein diet and mindful eating (making meals last 20 minutes and chewing slowly).
