Hi everyone. I have really enjoyed reading the posts here, they are so encouraging. I am one week out and am having a lot of trouble drinking enough and getting the protein in. Everything other than water makes me nauseous. I don't know if it is just in my head or what...did anyone else have his problem? If so, how did you get past it? I still have nearly two weeks to go before I am allowed soft foods and I am not hungry at all, but my husband (who is five months out from his surgery and doing great) is worried I will get dehydrated. Any advice??

Keep sipping water. When I was a week out, the smell of protein drink made me sick to my stomach.

Try:

mixing with the minimum amount of water/milk suggested on the package
put it in a yup cup (coffee cup with a lid) so you can't smell it
make sure it's reallllllly cold
if you're blending it, try just mixing it with a spoon and vice versa
the premade chocolate protein drink they sell at Costco got me thru... you might try it
order samples of other drinks from chike, unjury, vitalady.com
mix it into sugar free pudding (if your doc considers that a liquid - mine did)
freeze it into popsicles

Good luck!!!

My hubby put a couple ounces of liquid in medicine cups and I sipped it over 15-20 minutes.  I got all of my liquid in and didn't have any issues since it was in such small quanities.  As for protein, I used the whey bullets and made my protein goals.  Right now, I would focus on healing and getting liquids in.  Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!

Know that those liquids are your friend.  Don't worry if you don't feel hungry, that's the point of the surgery.  I struggled with protein but I didn't neglect my liquids.  A suggestion I used in the very beginning was protein smoothies from Smoothie King.  I got it with one fruit and sipped it for a few hours.  I didn't get the smell because it was covered and YES I sucked it through a straw.  It worked for me and was lesser of the evils - at least I was getting in some protein.  Good Luck!

Sip constantly do not put your fluids down. The most important thing is your fluids. Our doc counted SF Popsicles and oh they helped me in the beginning. I remember being so thirsty I'd sit up at night and sip. I could not drink a protein shake for about the first 5 months. Fluids # 1 protein will come later.I was not hungry(thank goodness for over a year)
Check Bariatric eating web site they have good tasting protein when you are ready.

Thank you everyone for the great advice. I feel better knowing I am not the only one who has a problem with the protein. I found some flavors of G2 gatorade I really like so I have been sipping that, its just good to have some variety. I also got some ckicken soup from PF Changs and strained it....YUM. I figure there is at least some protein in that.
