Did anyone have the IVC Filter placement???
Hello everyone! My fiance was told Monday that before RNY surgery he would have to get the IVC Filter to prevent any blood clots going to his heart during and after surgery. Has anyone else had this? He is very nervous about this filter. I would like to ease his mind on the issue.
Did it hurting while having it placed? Was it painful when removed? Any information is appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Shea
I had my IVC Filter placed in the first 10 minutes of my gastric bypass surgery.. I don't even know it's there... The one I have is a permanent one and I carry a card in my wallet that states this. The only time I think about it is when I have a scan and it shows up. I had a friend who had one placed before his surgery and he didn't experience any pain or problems.. If your fiance is at high risk for clots, then he need not worry about the filter. It's another tool to help improve his health and life. Here's hoping that all things go well and that soon he will be on the Losers' Bench!!
Take care and God Bless!!

I had a permanent filter placed (Greenfield) before surgery. I had a heart catheterization procedure at the same time. The actual process was fairly simple and straightforward. Recovery involved staying laying down for several hours and then some soreness and limited activity for a few days. My cardiologist does not like the retrievable filters because he finds that they are often not retrievable or are difficult to retrieve so he prefers and recommends the permanent ones. Its not a bad thing, you are more protected from strokes from then on. Since numerous members of my familly have had strokes I was not opposed to it.
I too had mine placed right before my RNY, then 10 days later after having a scan and seeing
there weren't any blood clots, I had it removed. They removed it in the operating room, I was given that "twilite sleep" so the doctor was able to show it to me after he removed it. I couldn't believe how large it was. I got to go home the same day. NO Pain at all.
It should be a piece of cake for him.
Good Luck

My filter was placed after they knocked me out for the WLS and I haven't noticed any side effects from the filter.
Mine was supposed to be temporary as it is a retrievable model, but I've developed blood clots post-op anyway (even though I was & still am taking blood thinners) and now it might become a permanent installation. Once the retrievable models have been in more than 4-6 weeks they become much harder to remove because your body tissue really starts growing/healing over them.
I had a few small clots reach my lungs(pulmonary embolism) and I have DVT(deep vein thrombosis) in my right leg. The filter may have already saved my life a few times.
I'm still hoping my body will break up the DVT, but there's only a slim chance it will happen.
