6 MONTHS AND I BLEW IT

I am really disgusted with myself............. I am 6 months with a loss of only 82 lbs (starting 350).   I have been checking out the losses for other people in my weight range and either they have hit 100 or passed 100 for the same time frame.

I followed the food plan but I did not consistently exercise due to issues with my knees.  So now I have been trying to play catch up, by taking aquatic aerobics 5 days a week 45 minutes.

I just hope I didnt blow it to badly because I know the most important time frame is the first 6 months.  I want to cry!!!!!!!

Hi Margie!

I have trouble with my knees as well. I had surgery 2/11/09 and I have struggled to get in enough walking. I try as much as I can and then some days it is so difficult.  I have found wonderful videos to work with.... Peggy Cappy is the person who does Yoga for the Rest of Us and she has several (4 I think now) that are out. I have the first two and I love them. I am looking forward to the others. I also know that the Arthritis Foundation has videos also that help people with bad knees etc... to find exercises that we can do. I have not ordered them but it might be worth looking into......

Don't worry... You can do. Just keep trying and putting one foot in front of the other. I take my tylenol about a half hour before I exercise and that helps. I also ice my knees when I am done to minimize the swelling.  Swimming though is great! I went swimming yesterday and boy oh boy it was amazing! I think I am going to re-up my pool membership!

I hope this helped! Chin up! Marcia

Marcia,
Thank you for the suggestion and positive words.  For now the aquatic aerobics is working awesomely for me.  I am really glad you are finding ways to get around your knee problems early on so you will be a smashing success!

Margie,

First off congratulations on your weight loss. You've done a great job.

Second, you can't compare your self to others. We're all different, we gain at different rates just like we lose at different rates.

You want me to be honest? I can tell you I didn't exercise on a regular basis, still don't. My bad, I know, but just because they rearranged my insides, doesn't mean my brain changed to like to exercise. I do love water aerobics, and when I sign up and go it's twice a week. I do like to walk too, but have been so busy taking care of my Mom that I'm not getting to do that too often.

Be thrilled with what you've done. Be proud of yourself and remember how you feel about you is going to make all the difference in the world.

Best wishes to you on your journey, your not done yet!

Most Dr's think the honeymoon period is 18 months ... work hard and you still have plenty of time.

It's not over yet!

Hey Margie :)

We are almost surgery twins :) I had my surgery the day after you! And man you truly CAN be my surgery twin :) I am struggling with the same fears and thoughts as you are. One girl who weighs LESS than me hit 150 pounds in the same time period and I sat back and thought..what the heck!!! ( I was always told the bigger you are the faster your first bit comes off..man it's work and  a struggle too)!!! My surgeon told me to quit comparing myself to others and no one person is the same and we will lose weight at different speeds!

I still feel I musta messed up and why haven't I lost more weight than many others. When I had surgery I was 492.6 and once I lost 120 pounds my body just quit!! Although I am losing inches right now but no weight loss since Feb 1st! How is that for a downer, lol!!!

Many others have this rule "No grains until goal". Well I did not follow that rule and maybe that is my problem. Although my surgeon told me grains are ok just in limited quantites and I don't have them often at all. I try and focus on high protein, veggies and fruits. But every now and then I like to make myself a pizza out of this low carb pita but not often do I have them. My only conclusion is I need to concentrate more on the liquids, get that protein in me more and exercise. I go to the pool but I cannot participate in water exercise yet because I am still too heavy to lift myself in and out of the pool on that crazy latters they have, lol! But then I will get more involved! I do go and do this riverrun at the pool because they have zero level entry and that is my only saving grace! I have started to walk but need to push myself more than I do.

Why am I telling you all this? Because I can relate!!! I seriously thought I would lose more in my first 6 months and now that I can eat more it worries me BIG TIME!!! I don't want to mess this up! Somedays I feel I do even though everyone tells me I am eating the right amounts..I still question myself! I know we can do it! Let's challenge ourselves and make some goals for our surgiversary K...we can do it!

:)

Hugs to you,
Carrie

Hi Margy,

Please, please do not be down on yourself. Something they never tell us before we have these surgeries is that there is a one in four failure rate. This whole push for lap banding infuriates me. I am a 12 year veteran of lap banding. I lost 70kg in 7 months. I exercised (mind you it took four hours a day to achieve this) and did everything right. I never even vomited once in my first year. Then I got pregnant. I still exercised for an hour everyday and managed to stack on 30kg in three months eating about 400grams of food a day. After I had the baby I breastfed and hill-climbed for 1 and 1/2 hours every day. I still gained weight. I continued to exercise to no avail till I destroyed my knees. I managed to keep all but the last 20kg off till my knees were so arthritic that I could no longer exercise enough. I now weight what I did when I started but I now have a seriously damaged body to show for it.  I blame the banding for my arthritis. I haven't had a meal in 12 years that has not hurt. I sincerely regret my choice. I would rather die young than do this again.

My point is that if you fail at this, chances are it's not your fault and if you are considering this surgery, think again. Unless you have serious health problems that make it worth the risk, DON'T  do this.

If you question this post, do some research on websites NOT owned by companies with a vested interest in this kind of surgery and you will find that I am not just talking nonsense.

Good luck.

Margie
You are not alone.  I am also almost 6 months out and have only lost 85 lbs since surgery (15 before) and started out about the same as you.  My friends (who are not WLS people) keep reminding me that I have never lost this much in this amount of time.  But I had expected to be at a minimum of 100 by now.  It is hard to let go of all my preconcieved notions and not let the fear of failure sabatoge me.  I am trying to increase my movement in anyway I can but I don't love it by any means.  I also am trying to cut out carbs (I should have never started them) and increase fluids.  I am also coming back to OH, I had lost my obession from before when I was gathering info.  We just need to keep plugging along and have faith that if we work the tool it will work for us.
So yippee  for us and lets keep our eyes on the prize of being healthier. Best of luck and best wishes.
