is it possible to get bariatric surgery over 500 lbs?

If you are able to travel, consult with Dr. Henry Buchwald at the University of Minnesota.  He has operated on people well over 500 pounds and will take high-risk patients.  He's an amazing person.  I had DS with him a few months back and he's the greatest.

Yes!  It is possible!

Dr. John Husted in Somerset, KY has an amazing success rate with patients over 500, and even over 600lbs!

I weigh 627lbs currently and he's going to do mine once I get insurance approval, AND because I am pear shaped he's going to do it lap, to make my recovery easier and have less chance of infection.

Definitely research it-- I did, and it pays for it!

hi i saw your post and was wondering how your surgery went, i weigh over 600lbs and was considering traveling to ky to try get dr husted to perform my surgery.

My high was 602 lbs.  The day of my surgery I was 573,  As of two weeks ago (don't have a scale at home), I was 461. 

It can happen.  You're better off going to a large city hospital that can handle any complications that could come up.  I researched a bunch of hospitals before I found one that would even consider doing the surgery on me due to my weight and psych history.  North Shore Medical Center even had a weight limit of 450 lbs so that was definately out!

I had mine at Mass General in Boston and couldn't be happier.  Good luck to you!

I agree with everyone else, regardless of the surgery you want, it's a must to get someone who has a lot of experience!

My doctor is top notch and his experience came in handy when he placed my Band.  I wasn't his biggest patient at 438, but I was pretty close.

I was so afraid he'd refuse, but he didn't and he and his office have been my biggest cheerleaders!
