Pre Op Testing, Gallstone Question...3/31 is RNY Day!

Wow, I've scheduled the tests that the bariatric center ordered...cardiac clearance (never been to a cardiologist before), EKG, chest xray, pulmonary function test, arterial blood gas, pulmonary clearance, pre op class, pre op clearance from primary care provider, pre op appt at surgeon's...yikes! I was diagnosed with gallstones like four years ago after this very painful attack but have never had any symptoms since...those stones are layin' dormant and not acting out, but I hear that the rapid weight loss following my RNY might **** them off or make them mate. In my intake paperwork at the bariatric center and before my consult with the surgeon, I wrote about the gallbladder attack; I don't know that any of the tests described above would address a gallbladder issue...My surgeon has stated that he would not remove a gallbladder during a lap-rny surgery like some other surgeons apparently do. I commented that it sounded economical to have the procedures combined; he replied, "For who?"

Anyone have any advice or experiences to share regarding this issue? Good to meet you all; I'm hoping that the loser's bench has extra-reinforced legs because here I come, real soon!

I had an similar experience as you... I had been diagnosed with silent gallstones years before my RNY, they found them while looking for something else. But like yours, my surgeon didn't want to take it during my RNY. 2 years after my gastric bypass, (and over 200lbs loss) I started having terrible pain, my surgeon diagnosed me over the phone, she also mentioned it could be a internal hernia, but it wasn't just a very diseased  gallbladder full of stones.

I was extremely obese and I believe she didn't want me on the OR table longer than I needed to be at the time of my RNY..
You will be fine... can't wait to see you on the other side

i had open RNY an had my gall bladder removed same time... surgeon said if i had opted for lap, they would of had to open me up any ways cuz my gall bladder was so bad an full of stones it would of been nearly impossible to remove it lap an not end up with it bursting an stones all over my insides... maybe thats the reason? duno.. just a thought..

Congratulations to you!

My surgeon knew I had many stones and sludge. He told me the day of WLS that he would not remove my gallbladder due to complication risks.

He told me to lose 100 pounds and come back in 4 months. I was put on actigall for those 4 months.

I thought he was being mean, never thought I'd lose that much so fast, but 4 months later I was back in having my gallbladder taken out and was down 99 pounds.

I thought gallbladder surgery was a breeze. I made 8 pumpkin pies from statch the day after.

Thanks for the input! I'll inquire about Actigall when I call the nurse tomorrow. My surgeon has not seen my gallbladder records even, I don't think...

Today I visited a cardiologist for a "cardiac consult and clearance for wls;" well the EKG was "abnormal," so I must go on Friday the 13th for a nuclear stress test. I just fit in that rotating camera machine thing...I mean JUST fit! In fact, Scott the tech recommmended that I bring a girdle to squish my lower tummy that day so the machine doesn't stop as it swings around due to my sold tubbiness! We were both cracking up, so I'm so thankful that I and others can have a sense of humor about life's obstacles! I hope that I get cleared for surgery! Never knew I had a heart issue, but I'm 45 and have been carrying around 300-400 pounds for so long, maybe I've caused the poor muscle damage! Sure hope not!
