Pre-op yesterday
Hi there,
Well, yesterday I had my pre-op with the surgeon and hospital. My brain if so full of info, I think it probably weighs more today, lol. I thought yesterday might freak me out and cause me to start being scared that it's coming so close, but I think I'm in my zone already... determined, maybe tense, but not scared.
There was actually some good news, my biggest fear was that he would have to do me open, and I say that because on my consult he said he needed me to lose 50-60lbs because he "didn't want to do me open" as I was in relatively good health (co-morbidities aside) and that just can lead to too many complications. Well, I guess I mis-remembered my starting weight (transposed digits), so instead of having lost the 72 I thought since May 08 pre-op, I had lost 100. Both the nurse and the dr did a double-take to recheck that and he says he is 100% sure he will not have to do me open and I have done and will do wonderfully. I also asked him how much longer I'd be in surgery or recovery with him having to fix my hernia at the same time and he said "5 minutes", lol. Now, I know I only lost so much so easily because I was/am so heavy to begin with and the road ahead will take some increased effort down the line and for the rest of my life, but I feel ok about it.
G-tube thing kind of freaks me out. He keeps it in 5-6 weeks, no exceptions. I'll handle it. I just need to go compile all my info today and distill it down to bullet items and not a stack of documents that's hard to view all at one time, so I know what I have left to do/get to prepare. I already have presciptions to get, have to get the vitamins, etc. I might be slightly overwhelmed.
I also find myself stressing about being gone from work. No need to mention the bad economy/layoffs etc, plus we're re-organizing and I'm not sure who I'll work for when I come back (I get 6wks short-term disability at 90% pay, so I'm taking it!), and I have one week left to try to train other people to do my stuff, which is going to be challenging. Maybe it will keep my mind of the surgery. MAYBE I need to not worry so much about work, as in the end, as a large corporation, they won't care as much about me. It's just my job, albeit it a good one, but this is my LIFE.
Had to board my doggies Wednesday and yesterday, since dr is 2hrs away. So glad to have the boys home :o)
Thanks for listening..... Oh, can anyone recommend any good post-op books to read/buy?

Hi Karen,
Glad to hear that everything went well with the doc!!! It sounds like you are going to do great!!
Sorry I can't recommend any post op books. However, I had got some books to read while I was recooperating, but never found time to read them. You will be surprised at what you feel like doing. Whenever I tried to pick up a book, I would start to nod off. I did enjoy reading magazines and doing some puzzle books though!!
Sending you positive vibes for an easy and speedy recovery!!!

I agree - you are doing a super job on your pre-op loss. Congratulations on such a great loss.
On the books, if you are looking specifically for WLS books, a friend on the Oregon board recommends 2 :
If you can find it, a good book is Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies or Weight Loss Surgery: A Lighter Look at a Heavy Subject. They both tell about all the surgeries and give you good advice. I think the last one does a better job, but most folks really like the Dummies book.
I haven't seen these, but wanted to pass on the suggestion.

Thanks ladies :o) As far as what I've been doing per-op, it all started with a basic 1800 calorie diet my primary doctor put me on. That, and starting to track calories on www.thedailyplate.com really was all I did. I've always loved fruits and veggies (along with too many other things lol!) so it really wasn't much of a stretch for me to eat better now that I was able to actually see how many calories I HAD been eating. Once you can see how much things were, it's easier to decide that, heck, that thing is reallly good but not worth eating like 2/3 of my day's calories. I literally stuffed myself with fruits and veggies (salads) and zero calorie cabbage soup. If you make the right choices, 1800 calories is ALOT of food.
I didn't even suffer much really, I still once each weekend splurged on a hamburger or chinese. I had Smart Ones for lunch and 100 calorie packs for snacks. SF jello and pudding were great. I'm really still too large to do much exercise (too chilly to swim still), probably could do more than I do, but as large as I am, just cutting back on the calories got me this far. Of course, once I had dropped over 40lbs, it also made it slightly easier to walk more, so I began parking farther away at work, etc. I'm not deluded though, I know it will get harder and take more effort the smaller I get. I mean, some of the girls at work who are fit literally have to eat nothing and work out like crazy to lose 5 lbs. I can't wait to have that problem!
