Re-Thinking VSG
Anyone who goes into a VSG with a BMI as high as 70 can't honestly believe they will ever get to (let alone stay at) a 'normal' BMI, probably not even overweight.
Sad. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them think....
~ I am the proud wife of a Guatemalan, but most people call me Kimberley
Highest Known Weight = 370# / 59.7 bmi @ 5'6"
Current Weight = 168# / 26.4 bmi : fluctuates 5# either way @ 5'7" / more than 90% EWL
Normal BMI (24.9) = 159#: would have to compromise my muscle mass to get here without plastics, so this is not a goal.
I my DS. Don't go into WLS without knowing ALL of your options: DSFacts.com
I stopped reading the responses at the end of this page becuase everyone seemed to be fighting and debating. I love my sleeve, it works for me. I did not want the band and RNY and DS was not an option for my surgeon as he thought they would be too risky with my bmi...I weighed 426 at the beginning of my journey.
The choice of surgery you make is purely for you to choose, it is what you feel comfortable with. Take time to consider the risks and what you want out of your life. Whatever you choose, it is that choice that you live. I personally will support you on your journey, whatever you choose.

Thank you so much. It really has gotten a bit "thick" on this thread. I was really beginning to think, what in the world have I started? Well, I think I've made up my mind, but I'm not saying until I talk with my best friend when she comes back in town Monday. She had the lap-band and it's working quite well for her, but I've got a lot more to lose than she did and I would totally be frustrated with it. But, thank you for the hug, I'm sending you a big hug. I do have one question for you, as far as protein goes, what did you start with and what are you using/pleased with now?
Have a beautiful day- we're actually going to make it into the 30's today- I'm soooo excited!!

You can rest assured that I will support you, regardless of WLS chosen. I have friends here and in real life who have bands, RNY's, DS, and VSG's. We're all capable of supporting each other. My history in this forum and the WA Forum is evidence of the fact that I support WLS of any kind because I understand that it is a very personal decison that can only be made by the individual having the surgery in conjunction with the advice of a qualified bariatric surgeon. My only concern with all pre-ops is that decisions made are based on *All* of the research available, not simply pie in the sky opinions that only include positive factors. Each WLS has it's pros and cons and each can be successful if its chosen based on your personal needs, both medical and psychological.
I wish you much mouck on your journey towards a healthier, happier, and longer life.

I live in Australia so our protein supplementation options are very limited. To tell you the truth now, I get the majority of my protein from food, but I choose high protein foods and fortunately I love seafood and make some fantastic scallop and prawn dishes that are simple and take about 3 mins. I also eat a lot of steak, well the term lot is an interesting one...lol. I also get 98% fat free shaved turkey breast and snack on that during the day if need be. If I think I need a protein boost I eat an atkins advantage protein bar, the chocolate decadence is to die for! I also have shakes for the days I feel I need to give my body a rest or to break a stall, I use a pre-made one called Aussie Bodies and I have the iced coffee.
Pre-op we had to use optifast, it was okay. I also have an atkins shake powder that I use now only very occassionally if I have not got my 80-100g of protein in, in the day to kick it up.
I eat 5-7 times a day by the way, always leaving 2 hours minimum between meals.
Feel free to ask me questions at any time.

I just wanted to make note of an observation that all of those loving their sleeve out here are up to a year out and STILL MORBIDLY OBESE. You might want to do a shout out to see if anyone started in your range ever made it to goal -- or how many made it to a normal weight at all?
I've seen a couple, but not many, really. Now, take a look at the DSers and where they are in their journeys. Many made it to a normal weight in about a year. Others, like me, are several years out and maintaining their goal. It's just something to consider. DO talk to Dr. Hares before you schedule surgery. It doesn't hurt to ask the right questions to a doc that can answer all of them.

As a revision from RNY, I would encourage you to go to the revision boards and see how many DS'rs you see needing revisions. That, in my opinion, tells the story as to which surgery works the best. Also read on the DS board and see how friggin' happy everyone is with their surgery. It's not all newbies, either.. we've got posters, 8, 10, 11 years out..
good luck to you hon and pm me if you want to talk further.
