ok I am having my surgery on the 11th of Feb...yeah meeeee!!!! I am 295lbs and a BMI of 52 anyway I am confused about the sugar intake...everything says dont eat anything over 5 grams of sugar...well what does that mean? does it mean nothing over 5 grams of sugar per item that you are putting into a recipe or does that recipe have to be a total of less than 5 grams? I am sooo confused...okay for instance I am doing protein shakes and my powder has 1 gram but my soy milk has 7 so that equals 8 grams of sugar!!!! Help me out I'm not sure whats up...

Congratulations on your upcoming surgery!

With the exception of non fat milk and fruit, I limit everything to single digits when it comes to sugar.

I try not to eat more than 9 grams of sugar per serving.

You could try Soy Slender, it's zero grams of sugar and comes in vanilla, chocolate and cappuccino flavors.

Hope this helps in some way. Best wishes to you as you begin your journey!

~Namaste~

I have VSG, so my dietary restrictions are different than yours.  However, I do limit *Sugars per serving* to less than 10.

For stuff that you're making, you'll have to add sugars together as you indicated in your post when adding soy milk to your protein powder.  For recipes, you'll need to figure out the sugars in all ingredients and then divide by number of servings.  I use
http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-calculator.asp to do this.

I wish you much success on your journey towards a healthier, happier, and longer life.
