i just found out that there is absolutley no way i can have surgery in 2009. I had such high hopes for this year and now i have nothing to look forward too. my insurance says i need to show 6 months of a supervised diet and i have failed at that many times. i just don't know where to begin. im only 18 and i have nothing going for me and all i think about is what my life could be like if i lose 200 lbs. I just cannot believe i have to wait 12 or more months to even begin the process of getting approved again.  Plus i was sitting on my couch today and the wood in it broke. I've never felt more worthless in my entire life. and of course in this situation i would go out and get fast food but i am going to try my hardest not too.
Anyway thanks for reading...

You can do the supervised diet. If you are ready to have surgery you are ready to put in whatever effort is needed to get the surgery. It won't be an easy road, but try to focus on the end in sight *big hugs* Take this time to examine what you want out of life, and to learn about nutrition because you'll need to know a lot about nutrition to have a successful weight loss surgery (as in lose all the weight and NOT regain). Good luck! Don't give up hope *more big hugs*

hun, just try to do the supervised diet! Its better than doing nothing at all... you got to understand that you WONT be perfect at it!! No on expects you to be perfect at it.. but at least you would try... the insurance companies wont have someone following you arund, looking at everything you put into your mouth. You'll write down everything you eat, meet with your dr once a month for 6 months and then its submited into the insurance company. Try to put things into perspective... I"ve been reading alot of your stuff and you seem to have a "I ate this so its the end of the world!" mentality... food is just food... if you change your thought process out of there being "good" foods and "bad" foods, you might end up with a better relationship with food. If you go to your doctor and start you supervised diet within a week or two, then you most definately CAN have your surgery in 2009! And by 2010 be a whole new you!! You are young.... you're 18 and have the world in front of you. NOW is the time to begin to make wise choices for your health... and I knwo you feel like you shouldn't need surgery to help you... but sometimes our weight is beyond our control. I had lost 70lbs when I left for college.. I was heavy my whole life! I went to college, lost 70lbs... maintained it for a few years... felt great about myself! (losing weight let the real me come out and I lost that "end of the world" feeling that I always had.. saying things similar to what you say) and then last year I got pregnant... I ate what my doctor told me to eat... but honestly less... got introuble alot because I wasnt eating.... got sick near the end and now I am sitting on 100lbs extra from my lowest weight... Being heavy sometimes just isnt our fault! But the thing is, we get so upset about our weight we turn to food because we think "I amalready fat, doesn't matter if I get fatter" at least thats what I had learned about myself. So... go and talk toyour dr and get on that surpervised diet! I am sure ANYONE HERE will tell yo uthey weren't perfect on thier 6 month diet... if they were then they wouldnt need surgery... but I garantee you even my tiny husband wouldnt be able to stay on a perfect 6 month diet... so its universal... has nothing to do with you and your weight.

I hope I helped.. I just want you to get all the help you need!! And.. you mentioned your mom alot... you are 18 and even though you're on her insurance I am pretty sure you don't need her permission... you're legally an adult. Now I could be wrong about that, its been awhile since I was on my folks insurance.. but I dont ever remember having to tell them anything when it came to medical proceedures. Don't let your mom put you down... sometimes parents think that if they "push" you and try to make you realize where you are that it helps... well it doesnt because we all have a mirror... we know how we feel and look like.... also your mom will tell you that you need to proove to her you can stick to a diet? MANY DSers will tell you that your relationship with food changes the moment you come out of surgery... now I cant give you first hand account yet... but everyone seems to tell me that food has totally changed for them.. AND its easier to maintain a healthy relationship with food when you're the smallest you've ever been and feel normal!

Ok.. I am off my soap box now... lol I just wnat to help you so bad.. you have such a great future ahead of you! Fight for what you need for yourself!

Depending on what your BMI is, your insurance may not require the 6 month diet. Double check on that just to make sure.

A supervised diet is not the worst thing in the world. It can include WW or simply going to your doctor each month to get weighed. Find out what your insurance considers a supervised diet and go from there.

If you really want this to happen in 2009, then you can make it happen!!

Careful..my insurance said WW was a 'fad' and made me do the six month diet all over again.

14 pounds lost before surgery. My first ticker is when I hit onderland: this was my goal when I started on this journey.  I want to focus on that right now...once I get there I can reevaluate.

My second ticker is my dream goal. Even if I only visit there for a short time, it would be nice to see that number just once.  I am pretty sure I'll need plastics to hit this goal.

I did the 6 month diet twice thanks to an insurance change but trust me while not perfect I did do it and I won. One of the first things to do for me was get off pop of all kinds and switch to sugar free drinks and lot and lots of water. And remember that you can lose the weight if you set your mind to it.

I have to say this or I wouldn't be me, if you are looking for a quick fix to your food addiction and for life to immediately become roses its NOT going to happen. You HAVE to work at this everyday, you have to make the right choices about what you eat, how much you exercise and what you do with the tool that surgery gives you. Now that being said the surgery give you a great tool to reach those goals an dto help keep you on the straight and narrow, but without commitment on your part to change what you can then it will fail. These are part of the reasoning some insurance companies require a pre surgical weight lose or diet to see if you are able to commit to the life style required after WLS.

NOW PLEASE KNOW WE ARE HERE FOR YOU TO LEAN ON WHEN YOU NEED IT!!  WE HAVE ALL WALKED THE ROAD YOU ARE ON.

If your insurance company requires a 6 month diet do you have 6 months of documented weigh with your pcp or 6 months of you trying to diet and he records it?  I got the paperwork from my suregon and my pcp filled it out (I was constantly on a diet so we had weight and documentation and he just "filled in" the small details.  HTH!!  Good luck!!

Hello my name is ericia. I was where you were today. I was 382lbs when I was trying to have surgery I was turn away because I didn’t have any health problem. I was so upset. I thought it was the end of the world for me. I thought I would never lose this weight. I change my insurance and I  got into the program for gastric bypass. I still haven’t had surgery but I have lost 70lbs on my own. I am still going to have the gastric bypass. The point I’m trying to make is don’t give up. It will be your turn you just have to be patient and you will be there. I prey for you to get your surgery. Go and do the 6month diet it will get you ready for your life change. Can you say your ready? Can you say I’m not going to get that hamburger if not then your not ready. Take the time to get ready. This is your life . Losing weight is never easy even with gastric bypass, the surgery is not a quick fix. I’m sorry but take the time now its only 6months well take care,

It took me over three years to get I done too. I know it's frustrating but you can start now...even if they won't. Try your best at the supervised diet and hang in there. I know you feel like it will never happen right now...I did too. It will though. Don't give up on yourself. (we wont!) It will all be worth it. You are still young so don't worry that you have nothing going for you...there is plenty of time to make changes and get where you want to be in life. Hell, I'm 34 and just getting there now Ha ha. Seriously though, I know you'l, do great...just keep fightng the fight.

Start: 487 lbs (8/07) Lost 81 lbs pre op on South Beach. 406 lbs at surgery (6/08). 179 post op, by 2011. I  lost 308 lbs. Gained 98 while pregnant (2012-13) lost all but 25. My goal is to be 179 again!
