I have realized something...and came up with a solution!! (Long Post...Sorry!!)
Hey everyone. I just want to vent for a few so please bear with me. I have been sitting here all day thinking about my life and what I can do to change it. I have came to realize that if i don't lose this weight, the reality is I am going to die. Period. I weigh over 400 pounds, and i am only 30 years old. 30 PEOPLE!!!!....If i don't lose this weight, i will not see my kids grow up, graduate, have kids of there own, and not to mention they will be without there mother. So, then i got to thinking, how can i do that to my kids? How can i be so selfish as to keep eating and not even worry about the concequences of my actions. Now, when i eat, I eat high in fat things like icecream, pizza, candy bars, all the wrong things. I need to eat better and I have just now realized that. It took me so long, but i realized that. So, here is what i am gonna do. First off, I am going to start eating better. Alot better. I am going to be a better role model for my kids. I am going to live for my kids. I am going to live for ME!!!!! I want to have this surgery so that i can get healthy. To hell with being skinny. I just want to get healthy. Be able to walk around the block without giving out of breath. Be able to play with my kids outside as well as get on the floor and play with them without worrying, how am i going to be able to get up from here? I want to live a normal life.
So, here is what I am asking from everyone here, or whoever is willing to help me out. I am deperate need of support. My husband supports me but he ahs no idea what I am going through. I need to be able to talk to others that have been there or are going through the same things as me. I need someone to kick me n the pants from time to time and tell me, hey, get up and exercise. You better not be eating candy. I hope everyon understands what I mean. I have one more appointment to go to and then they will send in my paperwork for approval. My last appointment is in february. Also, can anyone PLEASE, tell me what foods are high in carbs. I am going to try to cut down on them. My doctor is going to put me on the atkins diet 2 weeks prior to the surgery. Do you think it would be ok to start that diet now?
Ok well, thanks for reading this longgggggg post. Thank everyone in advance for everything. Also, if anyone has any good recipes I could try, Healthy recipes that is...lol....Please send me them. Oh BTW, I don't fry anything so thats a good thing....lol...K take care everyone and i look forward to hearing from you all!!!!

Here's the best solution for better eating habits...
Shop the perimeter of the grocery store. What that means is you have to prepare all of your own meals with fresh vegetables / fruits, meat and dairy products.
The inside aisles of the stores are highly processed foods that have little to no nutritional value and are one of the reasons why america is the fattest country in the world.
There are still some benefits to the canned vegetables/fruits, but the down side is they contain large amounts of sodium that you cannot control unless you spend extra $$ to buy the low sodium versions. Frozen veggies are a good bet.
If you plan to eat bread, cereals, pasta, find those that are high in fiber for now. Things like Natures Own double fiber wheat bread has 5 grams of fiber and only 40 calories and is the same price as regular bread. Fiber one cereal...1/2 of a cup has 57% daily fiber needs for only 60 calories. There are whole wheat pastas that have tons of fiber in them.
Post surgery, you won't be able to consume much bread, pasta, etc, but for now, these things will fill you up and help you to stay full.
Following the "shopping the grocery store perimeter" is very close to shopping for the adkins diet. Things like potatoes do have a ton of carbs in them so stick with cruciferous veggies or green leafy vegetables.
Good luck!

Hi Emelinda,
You have definitely come to the right place. The folks here really understand where you are coming from. I think this board with everyone starting out so large, is a little more compassionate & caring. I have been where you are. I used to love to eat all the bad stuff. Start changing what you can now, and it will help!!! I am being honest when I tell you my taste buds have changed since surgery. Even though I may want some bad stuff, I don't want it all, not the whole bag, box, carton etc!!!! I have a little further to go, but feel so much better. You can't imagine the energy you will have once you get even a little of the weight off. Exercising wasn't fun before, it is now. I actually feel good after I exercise!!! Do what you can now, walk a little, do chair exercises if you can't walk. Do you have to talk with a nutritionist... sorta sounds like you are going to need some help in the learning how to read food labels. My program included a few one on one appts with a nut...it helped a lot.
Carb filled foods include bread, rice, pasta, crackers, chips, potatoes, just to name a few, but fruit does also.. Just read labels, it will say how many carbs in a serving...be sure to check the amount in a single serving. You might want to try loging everything you eat on "thedailyplate.com" it really helps to see how many calories you are getting in each day!!!
What surgery are you looking at? There are forums here for the specific surgery you might have that might also be of help!!
Good for you for making the decision to go forward with making yourself healthy!!! I wish you speedy paperwork, and a quick surgery date!!!
Feel free to ask anything else you might need!!!

There are good carbs and bad carbs. Good carbs have fiber and complex carbs. Don't completely eliminate things like veggies, whole grains, fruits in moderation, potatoes in moderation (baked and boiled, with skin, I'm not talking about french fries and mashed taters here). Dairy can be high in carbs and its not a bad idea to moderate it somewhat, but dairy can be good for you in terms of protein.
Bad carbs are sugars, white bread, crackers, chips, popcorn, candy, soda, white rice, pasta, fruit juices, fruit with added sugar, etc. These types of foods should be moderated everyone's diet because they just spike your insulin and make you hungrier. To be as healthy as possible, try to avoid the processed food in the middle of the grocery store. Stick to produce, raw meats, dairy, etc on the outside of the store, as well as canned veggies (especially beans, which are packed with fiber and have a good amount of protein for very few calories - beans are also very satisfying to your hunger). One of the best things you can do for yourself and your family is cut out the restaurants and fast food as much as possible. Make it a rare treat, and when you do go to a restaurant consider splitting your meals.
I was 29 and 440 lbs when I came to similar realizations as you. Please continue to post, and ask any questions you want. We are here for support and we definitely understand where you are coming from.

I was the same way. I's embarrassing but we have all been there. The worst carbs are white flour, rice, high fructose corn syrup, regular corn syrup, sugar and corn (corn meal) products.
Try cutting out all liquid calories to start, they are the worst offenders, they raise your blood sugar fast and make you hungrier. Pop, kool aid juice anything with calories other than skim milk. I cut them pre-op and it really jump started my loss. Try to eat protein and low carb veggies only. Avoid potatoes and corn. Try water packed tuna with fat free mayo but skip the bread. MAke egg salad with fat free mayo. It's good with some black pepper. Try some of the fat free and sugarfree yogurts out ther for your sweet tooth, be sure they are NO SUGAR added though. I looked at a regular fruit yogurt today and it had 41 grams of sugar! Holy moly. Nothing you eat should have more than 5 grams of sugar per serving. 7 at the most but that's even alot. Sugarfree popsicles are a good treat. So is sugarfree jello. Stock up on those. If you are not a big veggie fan try some canned veggie soup to get them in. No crackers though. eat it with some protein.
This is what I ate pre op (well not the meats I am a vegetarian...I was a nearly 500lb veg! WOW!! I was really a CARB-a-terian) anyway it really does work. It's a good idea to read the South Beach Diet book. It's kind of fru-fru but the basics it promotes are solid . Most Libraries have a copy.
Hang in there. I am so happy for you that you have made the 1st step!

Thanks for all of the replys everyone. I have really been doing some research online and trying to figure out the carbs and stuff. Also another good thing is I am going to start seeing a therapist, which was the woman I saw for my psych evaluation...She herself is a gastric bypass patient so I know that she knows where I am coming from. Ok well I am gonna get going. I just wanted to thank everyone for all of there posts. I will be blogging more on my OH page. I will also try to post more on here. Thanks for all the support and suggestions. Take care everyone!!!
Seeing a therapist is the best thing I have done for myself. It does not hurt that she is 5 years post op either. I started to see her 1 year before I had my surgery to tackle alot of my issues ,especially binge eating. I felt more prepared going into surgery and better equipted to handle my post surgery lifestyle.Good luck.
You might as well be telling my story! (except I don't have kids...) I am 30 as well and over 400... I did my last appt already though, and am waiting on insurance approval as we type... and it is driving me sooo crazy! I soo want to call and check up on my status at the surgeon's office but am trying so hard to wait for them to call me.
Good Luck! If you want moral support I am here, we can do this together!!!

I am very proud of you for making such important choices! I think we have all been there. God knows I have, and still am. it is a constant battle. It is a scary road but you have friends who are going to travel this road with you every minute, every day, every month, every year you are on it. We agreed we are in this for the rest of our lives. We can do it.
