Having surgery tomorrow, BMI 66, worried .
I'm having surgery tomorrow and my liver appeared fatty on the ultrasound. My bmi is 66 and the surgeon tossed around the chance that if they get in there and my liver is too difficult for the retractor to hold it away from one of the surgical spots, they would pull out, I would go home and spend a few more months getting my liver to be not at fatty and then they would go in and so the surgery. Has anyone ever had experience with this?
Hi Jane,
My surgeon had talked to me about this, and basically told me that even losing a few pounds before surgery would help. I basically cut out carbs and sweets about 2 months prior to surgery. I started with a BMI in the 60's also, and was able to have my lap RNY done. Sending good vibes your way that you may have your surgery completed tomorrow!!!
Good luck to you

I was right where you are. My doctor didn't make a big deal about it, but he did make me lose weight before the surgery, which in the end made the fatty liver issue easier to deal with. However, I only lost about 12-15lbs before surgery and everything was fine.
Also, my BMI was higher than 66 and my doctor didn't have any problems.
greetings
my bmi was 66 when i had surgery. my doctor didn't even mention losing weight prior to surgery, or voice any concerns about my liver. perhaps this is because i was having my rny done open, not lap, due to some previous surgeries i'd had which made lap not a possibilty.
the open surgery went great -- no problems.
best of luck to you!
